My suggestion would be a Canon SX-50. I think Walmart has some left for about $300.

The SX-50 or any bridge camera is a far cry from being considered a "pocketable camera" though unless you're a kangaroo.

Thanks for all the good info. I already have a Panasonic Lumix FZ200, so I don't need another similar camera in the Canon SX50. The ad for the A5000 caught my as being a pretty good deal for the price, and the lack of an EVF or capability for an add-on EVF isn't a deal breaker for me. I was more interested in the quality of the images it produces and ease of operation. I've been using cameras without an EVF for so long now that lack of one doesn't even cross my mind. I use the viewfinders on my D90 and FZ200 almost exclusively, though. The second camera that has caught my eye, and that seems to have good reviews is the SX500HS. It's only niggle, it seems, is it's low light performance could be better, but I generally am outdoors in the daylight to take pictures most of the time anyway.

I have the S100, which I got refurb at Canon, and it's great.

Not quite as pocketable, but still very compact, is the G15. It's a bargain refurb this week at Canon, for $230. OK but not great viewfinder, hotshoe, and dials. Has a great reputation for image quality. Shoots RAW, as well.

Ditto!!! Have the S100 & a G16. Both (as well as G15) are "fine" cameras. If buying Canon, always check refurbs on Canon website often.

First off - resolve the issues that you're having with the camera that you have!

Reset to factory specs.

Re-read the book.

Consult the dealer.

Return for repair of replacement.

Before ya chuck it and start from scratch!

IMHO, of course.

Would look funny in a pocket.

Is that how he tries to impress the girls? Problem is that the pants bulge is in the wrong place. It's either supposed to be in the wallet or behind the zipper but after your GAS attack the wallet is pretty flat. LOL.

I bought my hubby a Nikon S9500 a couple years back and that has proven to be a great camera. It has a 26X zoom, it is great in low light, and fits in his pocket (including his shirt pocket.) As far as recommendations, I can't help, I can only relay our experience. Good luck with your choice. :)

Here again, the S9500 only shoots in JPEG and not RAW or TIFF files, but it is a nice small camera. However, due to it's low ISO and small sensor, it doesn't do well in low light situations.

You are correct, it does not shoot in RAW, however, it does perform well in low light situations without a flash (indoors and museum lighting).
