Looking for feedback from a member that may have a G16 point and shoot from Cannon. Have EOS 40D and what to carry another camera for quick shots.

Own it, use it, but found I needed more in a camera, so I went to my Canon T4i with the new Sigma 17-70mm lens.

It is a great easy to carry camera with all the controls you want and are used to having. the menu is the same as what you have so learning curve is about nil. most important it has an optical view finder.

I have just got one yesterday so I can't comment on performance. I got it because it has a large aperture lens for a compact, so it should be good in low light. I also gives you a raw file.

It seems pretty responsive and the controls seem conveniently laid out.

It is about twice as heavy as my other compact, a Canon Ixus 125 HS, but there is a lot more camera, so no real surprise.

I've had a G16 for a year - same objective. I love it. Fits in most pockets (I usually slip it in a microfiber bag, first). Great lens. Quick. Good photos. I wish the viewfinder were a little better. Manual focus is awkward.

Hello Jefren. Thank you for the feed back. I thought auto focus was part of specifications. Maybe that is in program mode only. It does say Pro Style Manual Focus Control also in specifications. But then it says High Speed AF puts images in focus very fast. Is the view finder clear and bright as well as large enough. Will order it Monday. Looks like everybody has the same price. Fred A Thank you again.

Fred, the autofocus usually works very well. Occasionally, I want to use manual focus. The viewfinder is a huge step down from a DSLR. Improving the viewfinder is my #1 wish for this camera. I hope you enjoy yours. Happy shooting.

I have a G16. I recently bought it to complement my Canon S100 and SW50 HS. Camera is fast and responsive. Optical viewer is okay, definitely better than an electronic but could use more detail through the viewer, i.e. focus point. IQ is excellent!!! Autofocus is fast and works well as mentioned by jefren. Build quality is solid. WIFI, HDR mode work well, as well. Having the exposure adjustment dial next next to the mode dial is really handy. LCD screen is bright and informative. No USB cable but we all have plenty anyway, so no big deal. Check Canon's support site and download the manual. Lot of good info there and besides, you only get a quick guide when you buy. 28-140mm equivalent is okay (?). Would have liked a little more, but I've got the SX50 so what the heck. Lastly, it's a little pricey and doesn't show up on Canon's refurb web page yet. Sweet compact. Wouldn't exactly call it pocketable except, maybe, a coat. Buy it, you'll like it.

Thanks greyfox. Going to order it Monday. Just working on flash. Have seen kits but looks like generic flash. Using this forum is working very good for me. Thank you for your comments.

Fred A - I have a Canon Speedlite 380EX and a 420EX, both of which work fine. Also use a Canon Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 with the the 420EX. If you buy a Canon Speedlite, be sure to check the Canon refurbished flashes before you pull the trigger. For the record, I rarely use a flash with my G16. Primarily shoot RAW in AV mode and tweak the ISO to give me a livable shutter speed. Images usually look fine. If a little dark, I adjust in Lightroom. I recommend you play with the camera without an external flash for a while. Good luck.

greyfox. Thanks. That is just what I needed to finish up the purchase. Still have my EOS 40D and always ready to go. With all the lens, I have to use two bags. Thanks again, Fred A
