Nikon 80-200 2.8 and D7100 (Page 3): Too bad that lens didn't work, having read Thom Hogan's review on that series of lenses, it should have been a good one.

I've been fortunate; the seller is refunding my $ and I've found another one only it is a AF-S so it will work on my 5000; I'm getting it at a great price so I hope it works, seller is a shop with 100% feedback and full refund if needed. I'm still going to get the 7100 on Black Friday

That lens, and the single ring version before it, are pretty good lenses, and you can have that focal length range without much of a compromise. And still get your D7100.

Actually, a book that will go into more depth than your manual would be Mastering the Nikon D7100 by Darrell Young. It would be worth purchasing just for the expanded section on focus. It's not a book about photography, however, it's a detailed book about your camera.

Google Scott Kelby for some good books about photography, as well as Brian Peterson.

I'd look for a copy of a D7100 book written by David Busch. His style of writing tells you how to set up the camera for different uses and makes lens recommendations, etc. Lots of information but an easy to read and follow style.

I just spent time reviewing page by page books by Young and Busch on Amazon Books. Both seemed very good to Excellent. I chose Young's as it seemed more to my style and liking. Thank you for the hint. Love this site as it has been so helpful. I'll have the book before the camera so I'll enjoy the reading as prep for the camera.

Glad to help. It's not gonna be a fast read. I'd recommend reading the section on focus and probably on metering. It's also great for using the index as you need to look things up as needed. It's about 500 pages, so I'd read 5-10 pages/day until finished. Some you'll be able to skim.

When I was in HS I liked the books you could read 20 pages one night and the rest of the book the next. With everything else I'm currently doing this may take awhile. But due to my desire to learn some other thing may get demoted on the priority list. Thanks again

Dave, you already own a D5000. There is enough similarity between it and the D7100 that you already know 80% of the newer camera. I started with a D200, got a D70s, then a D300, D300s, D700 adn D800. The D800 is a far cry from a D70s, but the "culture" and "spoken language" is similar. You don't need to trouble yourself to read a manual end-to-end. Just focus on the "new" stuff.

I have not been on the Hog for a while but this is a good place to jump in. I am not familiar with this lens but I do have a D7100. Now I may be wrong, but my understanding is that the 80 -200 AF version requires the camera body to have a AF motor in the camera in order to auto focus. The D5x00 do not have this which is why it will not focus the lens. The D7100 does have this. If you look at the mounting ring you will notice what looks like a small flat head screw driver bit. This drives a screw mechanism on the lens. If the D7100 is not working with the lens that mechanism may not be working. How old is the lens, it maybe malfunctioning here? The drive on the lens could be bunged up. Is the D7100 operating properly, will it focus other AF or D lens mounts with the internal motor. First make sure that the AF/M switch on the D7100 body is not in manual mode. I have done this with my nifty fifty D lens.
