Not to worry! It's just such a great photo that I just want to use it to compare other moon photos to. Besides I just like looking at it!

It pretty much does, but it's just a little different in the tools and how you use them. Photoshop has a few features that are easyer for removing background for example. But You can do pretty much everything in GIMP that you can in photoshop.
The thing of it is, It's free vs photoshop costing several hundred dollars!

Actually, Photoshop does the stacking automatically for you, just like a stacking program, no need to remove any backgrounds!

Thanks lamiaceae and everyone else for the helpful posts.

What is a good aperture opening for this process?

Your len's sweet spot, usually 2 to 3 stops up from wide open, e.g., f/5.6, f/8, f/11

Ya, I know, that does make it nice! I just didn't want to pay for it to do a few photos once in a while! If I were doing it a lot professionally, that would be different. Then I would spend the money.

Moats' Workshops were recently discussed in the Macro Forum. The last few posts sum-up the conclusion:

I don't want to start a war but seems to me that it's similar to; Who makes the best camera? Maybe; That lens is very fast.

To a degree, the word "macro" is pretty vague.

Technically macro is 1:1 reproduction - a little more or a little less. When it is greater than 1:1, it's called photomicrography, microphotogaphy, etc. Nothing too vague about it, unless you are a lens manufacturer, then anything greater than 1:4 is macro.

Not to some of us.
I am very very comfortable with Douglass's definition.

Yes, especially if you say stuff that is just wrong.

Ya well, what ever you say! Sometimes wrong is just a matter of opinion, and obviously you have strong ones!
