I really like the metaphor of "light at the end of the tunnel" and of "...access to the brighter beyond..." and it brings to mind my favotie image of Willianm Eugene Smith's of the two toddlers on a path about to leave the dark wood.

The difference between the two realms is very real but of less contrast in this image ...
Gotta thonk some more

Lights brighter, darks darker?
I'm inclined to agree, certainly darks darker, but I am wary of going too dark on here as dark images seem to be passed over or commented on as too gloomy when gloomy was the effect I was going for... I guess if I get that comment I'm getting what I wanted :-)

This is gorgeous, Graham. I love that dark foreboding water with the reflection from the sky. Nice detail ... even in the water. Love the way you handle the highlights, great focus and depth. It's a keeper.

OK. I figured out what I meant...wheayher it means schmotz to you is another matter.
Id like the closer regions of the walls of the waterfall pool to be darker...black, even, and have them lighten fairly quickly on immediate approach to the waterfall itself.
Betcha it'd make a difference! Good kinda difference? Not so good?
Lemme know.

I would prefer darker highlights Graham - a bit more dark and moody perhaps - still a great shot though

Hello Malcom, I totally agree with the darker moody look, that is the way I like my B&W to be. I'm not sure about darkening the highlights too much though. I prepared another version last night which I will post now. I do find that, when I post B&W's that are dark I get hit with comments about them being too gloomy... You can't win 'em all :-)

A beautiful image Graham that most would be happy with.
I like the composition and the subject, the way the cliffs come in towards the waterfall and the pool is prominent at the bottom.
I think you could have enhanced the mood by darkening the sky and background a bit to bring out the broodiness.
