In addition to your budget, what type of photography does your wife primarily do? A 6D (landscapes, portraits, tourist shots, etc) or a 7DII (sports, action shots) may be more practical choices. The 5DIII does both well, but at a price. All 3 have good high ISO performance. The 5DIII also offers fewer choices on the mode dial. It can be used on automatic, but she would get the most out of it using Av, Tv, or Manual. Would she want to learn to use those settings or would she prefer a larger choice of automatic settings? The 5DIII is really no harder to learn to use then any other Canon DSLR. You just have fewer automatic settings to fall back on. As far as what lens, that would also depend on what she wants to shoot. On a full frame such as the 5DIII or the 6D the EF 24-105mm f/4 L is an excellent all purpose lens. On a 7DII the EF-S 18-135mm is highly regarded.

I think she should have some serious input here. The three cameras suggested are great cameras. I would have loved to start out with either of these when I moved from film to digital.

If action/sports shots are not her primary targets, then I would highly recommend the Canon 6D. You will get great low light performance. The 6D is the smallest and lightest of the three models. This may be a serious consideration. My daughter prefers the size and feel over the 5D MK III.

If she is willing to learn, she will love the camera and will not be in need of an upgrade. If you purchase less of a camera, she may be in want of an upgrade. If you purchase from a local camera shop there is a good chance that they have a class that would be free to learn the ins and outs of the camera. There are also many videos on youtube that will help with the learning curve.
Lucky wife!

Hi Steven, the 5DIII (and 6D) are super under low light. However, there are no pre-set modes (scenic, sports, and others found on the more entry level cameras) on the 5DIII. However, there is a fully automatic and program mode. You shouldn't be overly concerned by this but understand that there may be a learning curve depending on her knowledge level. Maybe this isn't even a concern, just wanted to throw that out there.

Good luck, I absolutely love mine. I had a close call last week when for the first time ever, I dropped it. I broke the fall with my foot, but still landed pretty hard on the asphalt street. I felt like such a dummy. To my surprise, the camera was okay and came out with only a nice scratch near the frame by the shutter. Whew!

my wife and i have a 6d and a 5d mark 3 i purchased for her birthday and i can say that i pick up and use her 5d but she never picks up my 6d lol
she loves her 5d , she learned to use it faster than i did as she keeped reading this little pile of paper they include in the box some one told me its called an owners manual , not something i would do lol
theres not much it wont do has a great auto focus system , good in low light 6 frames per sec and is built like a tank
their are some good books around on useing the 5d that cover most aspects of Photography and settings
i do agree with others that getting her to hold and play with a few cameras would be a good idea i took Tracy into local camera store and she played with the 5d its a lot of money if the girls not happy with it
as for lens there are some very talented lady Photographers on this site that seem to like the lighter combos with very good results , i would ask some of these girls for advice

I have the 6D and if money grew on trees I would be upgrading to the 5D III. Don't get me wrong, the 6D is a great camera and I am happy with it but the 5D is that much more.
