How close were you and what were your settings? If you had a wide open aperture or were set to an auto macro mode fow flowers, it would explain the shallow depth of field. This usually produces a nice "bokeh" effect if you can get your main subject in focus. This pretty and you're not too far off...

No, they're not in focus, but I like it, Chuck! I don't know what aperture you used, but it worked well with this. I love the soft, dreamy look of the first picture.

Thanks. Used I think f 2.5. If I used a f9 or above I would have been in
Focus. Some of the photo is in focus not all. Just got the lens and first
shots. I do like the soft look of the pics what do you think? Also
The light was real harsh and also used a polarizing filter
