Maybe We Really Are Alone in the Universe

I've never bought into the argument that because there are billions of planets, there must be intelligent life on one besides earth. Recently, Brian Cox, the English scientist, said he believes we really are alone in the universe. I agree. I think we will find that life is common, but not intelligent life.

Aside from all those convincing pictures of UFO's and the testimony of people who have met aliens, we have no proof that intelligent life exists on other planets. Here's an interesting article.

Your "Belief" may be derived from a lack of a grasp of just how "Humungus" is the Universe? Is their only one universe? How big is it? How many opportunities are there for life (including intelligent life, not unlike yourself) to arise through an infinite time lapse?? I have to ask you, what is it about your preferance in believing in the idea that "we're it and the only it? is that just a need you harbor.... To feel unique. I mean no unkindness here, I am just considering the concept, and I believe that it's your choice to believe that way, but not necessarily a true conclusion. I'm just SAYIN. And please believe me, I don't ever intend to be RUDE....Though, some say " I come by it NATURALLY.. RJM (digit-up)

It's possible the univese is chock-full of life and life-like structures but we will never have any interaction... it's possible other life forms are already contacting us and we just don't know it... it's possible that we will not be able to recognize other life forms when we come into contact...

I wouldn't give up on et yet... the universe reflects intelligence.

I've always been interested in science and space, and I watch and read all I can. Sure, it's possible that there is a Star Trek-like array of civilizations out there, but I don't think there is. I have no doubt that we will discover microbial life and maybe larger creatures, but the requirements for life, and for intelligent life in particular, are so strict that I think humans are alone in the universe. Look at the section beginning with "Our Rare Earth."

As for all the other universes, that's a topic for another day. At this point, we are like cavemen just peeking out of the cave. If the human race last for a few more millenia, we'll have more answers.

My personal "TAKE" on intelligent life in the universe, is that WE aren't doing so well, ourselves. The average occupant on the planet, is, well.....pretty damned STUPID.. If Earths inhabitants are "All-There-is" in the universe, than there truly is an utter absence of intelligence... in existence.. I have shown this trait so many times myself... RJM

All I'm suggesting to you is, that given infinite potential for variance, star to star, universe to universe, I'm hard pressed to believe that WE-ARE-IT????

One theory about why we haven't been visited by creatures from other civilizations is that they got wiped out by war, disease, or natural disaster before they could develop interstellar travel.

Imagine if the average person had the intelligence of Einstein. We would be flying all over the galaxy. Financial considerations also play a large part in how quickly science advances.

I saw a good bumper sticker: "Beam me up Scotty. there's no intelligent life here."

I have'd loved astronomy scince I was a child.Back then there was no evidence of other solar systems in our galaxy...now we know better.Does not nature repeat it self?

IMO this is not a topic for beliefs!

It is much more about probabilities.

Once we detected another planet had water on it probabilities soared for life away from Earth.
Once we detected another planet existed orbiting another star probabilities soared for life outside our solar system - especially when one was detected with temperatures ripe for liquid water(sic)

Now several thousand such planets have been detected!

However we know from experience on Earth that intelligent life is fragile! More than once in the last million years human numbers have crunched to less than 100 individuals due to various catastrophic circumstances. One direct hit from a large meteorite can end intelligent life for many more millions of years etc etc.

This is why we are so so lucky to be alive at this point in time in intelligence/awareness of our position in the Universe.

Fascinating topic!

Jerry,
Nice article. I tend to agree that the cosmos is going through some transformation and settling down. GRBs are reducing in number as the galaxies are spreading apart. This would tend to infer that any form of intelligent life is just maturing to the interstellar phase of it's growth, and if that's the case, then communication with another extraterrestrial civilization at this point in time is futile if their development cycle is at the same level as ours. The vastness of space will delay any such communications. But, there's always HOPE. Hell, we can just hope that there is intelligent life in Washington, D.C. let alone on other worlds. Let's try to first straighten out our own world before we attempt to spread this chaos elsewhere in the cosmos. We've got at least a few million years to figure out how to do just that. LOL.

George Dvorsky, the guy who wrote the article in the link, is not a scientist. If you google him you will learn that he's a bioethicist, transhumanist (whatever that is), and futurist. He also has some very odd notions about the world and life. Some may be valid but the bottom line is that he has no scientific credentials in the area that the article covers. When you boil it down, we just don't know who or what is out there. But not knowing if something physical exists doesn't automatically lead to the conclusion that it doesn't exist. It means we just don't know.

I finks that what the human race has done to this planet in so few years ,? I hope they don't discover another planet to fuck up ,the whole world is run by complete IDIOTS ,what a shame for our grand children ,I am a pensioner worked hard on this planet since I was 15yrs. and don't envy the young uns
I would have hoped those in charge could have learnt by the huge mistakes made by the IDIOTS before them but NO their wage comes first ,an screw the people that voted them in ,

Unfortunately, the leaders are just other humans. It's the human race that is bad. Just look at the way we treat each other. Getting rich and putting other people down is all that matters.

You seem to think that we're intelligent life. Just for the sake of argument let's say we are. Look at what we've done with it. Sure we have some pretty amazing gadgets out there but we're destroying the very space we live in. Somehow the word intelligent seems ludicrous.
