My dilemma is to either wait for the new Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary or purchase the existing 150-500mm. Will the new lens be worth the wait over current deals (currently retailing for 630 GBP) Also of course the Tamron 150-600mm is an option but 950 GBP.
I will be pairing with Canon 5D MK3, and using the lens for predominately sports/action for local Rugby club.

Hopefully the new Sigma's will be more readily available than the Tamron 150-600... which is still experiencing distribution problems. Also still waiting for the Sigma 150-600mm C release price, which hopefully comes in line with the Tamron.

Thanks, I see the S is out already at 1500 GBP, waiting for some reviews on it. Price wise I can justify the C and hopefully come in around the Tamron price.

Since you stated you would be shooting sports, I would save more and purchase the Sigma Sport model. That's what it was designed for. Sure, you can afford the C now, but price is long forgotten if you are happy with the S.

rjallen - have you considered a Extender EF 1.4x (II or III)? Your 5DIII will autofocus at f/8 for this extender on the compatible Canon lenses in your portfolio. I've been very impressed adding this tool. If there's a difference to see in the image quality, I have not seen it on my lenses. Obviously, it won't turn your primes into zooms .... but will turn your 400 to 560 as well as useful changes to the 70-200 and the 135.

Thanks, I wasn't aware the 1.4x tele would give me AF on the 400mm f/5.6. The big advantage is obviously the zoom with the Sigma and of course OS/VR, which for sport which is big bonus. I currently use my 70-200mm f/4 for matches, but with obvious telephoto limitations. Grateful for your input, much appreciated.

One side of me says go for it and don't look back. The other side says wait until the lens is out and the reviews are in and the costs are known. Obviously I can't help you with your decision but right now I'm waiting for more information. Good luck whichever way you go. BTW, I'm most interested in the Sport at this moment but once the reviews are in on the S vs. C vs. the Tamron I may change my mind. ;)

I tend to agree with you, perhaps wait a while to see how the three new 150-600mm's rate against each other. The S gets a good write up but the C may have similar IQ minus the weather sealing and build quality, also read good things about the Tamron especially since it has has a Canon firmware upgrade. Thanks for your views.

You hit the nail on the head. The way I would use these lenses the build quality is not paramount but the IQ is. ;)

I agree with CGH Canon, why not try the teleconverter, for now? I'd hate to see you forego the S model, which seems more appropriate for your needs.
Especially if weather sealing may be a feature exclusive to the S and not the C? I've only been to the UK once, but don't you get plenty of rain there? Matches get played in the rain?

The Tammy is still a back ordered item, at least here in the US. If sporting events are what you are really looking to shoot, then the Sigma "S" may be the choice for you, though more expensive than the Tammy or soon to be released Sigma "C" lens. I am waiting for the Sigma "C" to be released and some results to show up before I make a similar purchase, but I do not need, as much, a lens for sporting events. If you have the time, at least you would have the benefit of comparing all, then choosing.
