iPhoto problem after update to Mavericks

I have a six-year-old iMac that has plenty of power and storage left. I also have about 7,000 photos in iPhoto and love its simplicity and quality (I'm a bit of a minimalist). Since upgrading to Mavericks iPhoto does not work as well -- the initial photo is fine but any time I attempt to make even small improvements the image begins to degrade. I upgraded to Yosemite hoping that the problem would be resolved, but it wasn't. Has anyone else had that problem and, if so, did you identify and fix the problem?

Not sure if you mean Mavericks or not, the latest OS is Yosemite which does not recognize iPhotos as Apple is coming out with a new "Photos" that will replace iPhoto and Aperture. The "Photos" will be out later this year or early next year.

Iphoto and Aperture are RECOGNIZED by Yosemite fine... they actually get UPDATED after a Yosemite install so that they run under Yosemite....the PHOTOS app will eventually replace both Iphoto and Aperture.

Until the new app arrives, IPHOTO and Aperture still run under Yosemite.

Where are you storing your IPhoto pictures? Are they on your hard drive or on an external hard drive. If they are on your hard drive they are taking up too much memory .Store them on an external

I keep about 6,000 on the hard drive and duplicate most on two external hard drives. I can't use iPhoto when I call the photos up from the external hard drives unless I put them back into iPhoto. I do have Aperture and may simply put the current one in that program and make adjustments in Aperture.

Instead of storing your pictures on your hard drive, make an alias of your folders on your external hard drive an use the alias to work with iPhoto .and erase the folder on your hard drive

Iphoto stores all images IN a library file... by default that file is found in the PICTURE folder on the local hard drive....

To use a LIBRARY file in another location, you will need to select a new library file by starting IPHOTO with the OPTION key held down, then select or create the new library.

Creating an alias of a folder on an external drive is not quite enough....

What it sounds like is you are opening a jpg file over and over to change it. This is not a lossless file format. Each time it is recopied it loses information.

Apple has stated that though they will no longer develop iPhoto and Aperture 3, those two programs will continue to operate on Yosemite. No promises beyond Yosemite. I don't know where you got your information that Yosemite doesn't recognize iPhoto and Aperture.
