Catfish, years ago when I was a much younger fellow, we had been taught that a prime lens was a fixed focal length lens of high quality; never a zoom lens, but always of high quality. Today, however; any lens that is not a zoom lens is known to be a prime lens regardless of its quality or it's cost. Then, of course, prime lenses today can be broken down into subcategory named lenses such a wide angle, extreme wide angle, Micro, Macro, medium telephoto, special purpose, long telephoto, and super telephoto. Then, subcategory prime lenses can be broken down even further whereby they can be called portrait lenses, landscape lenses, panorama lenses, and standard focal length lenses and, of course, I may have missed some of the other given names whereby some of our members may have other names of which they can assign to a prime lens.

Crazy isn't it? You forgot one category though "that &#%!@?!" lens" when you can't seem to get good focus or it steams up on a cold morning therefore preventing what you know is the shot of the century.

I think this thread should have had a photo example taken by the poster tied to the said sharp lens.

You look at some family photos taken around Le fin de ciecle and they appear razor sharp. But they were taken with 8x10 views. Seems to me we haven't had that sharpness until recently with high pixel digital and it appears tact many zooms are good enough.

I used to have fun shooting Kodalith film (ASA 3) with the 55mm Micro-Nikkor reproducing half-tone images that appeared like continuous tone prints from a normal viewing distance. It was scary sharp. I didn't compare with other lenses but it certainly left the impression you could make microfilm with the F2 and the 55mm.

OK, I'll bite since I probably have the sharpest lens on UHH!
Even though I will probably never have the ability to put the lens through its paces to verify its sharpness.

My Nikkor Ultra Micro f1.8 28mm 1/10 lens.

It will supposedly resolve 700+ lines per mm. THAT'S SHARP
Let me know if your camera has a 39mm 1/26"p screw mount!
SS

I'm really curious - what are these '1/10 lens' and '1/26"p' that you mention?

Thanks

I've seen it referenced before that they (non zoom) are all primes however primes can be called telephoto when the focal length goes beyond what the human eye perspective sees -- so anything above 50mm can be called a telephoto. Not sure I explained that the right way so correct me if I'm wrong please.

Sounds correct to me. :)

The new Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art lens is one of the sharpest lenses I have ever used. I only say that because of the corner to corner sharpness of the images I get from it. Keep in mind that just about every lens has a sweet spot where it is extremely sharp right in the center. I have used many Canon, Nikon, and Sigma lenses. The prime macro lenses always seemed to give me the sharpest photos with my style of photography.

I loved the Canon 55mm f1.2 s.s.c. Aspherical lens for me the best, sharpest.

In case you have missed it, Popular Photography has been testing two lenses a month for many years. The sharpest lenses they have seen are made right now in the new line of lenses called Otus by Zeiss. The 85mm./1.4 is reviewed this month. These lenses cost $4000 and up. There are, however, less expensive lenses like the new line prime Nikons with 1.8 aperture that are as sharp. There is also a strange lens made by Sigma that keeps showing up as the sharpest of all these lenses: the 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM that sells $350-400 right now!

(And what is the difference between a prime and telephoto lens?)

A “telephoto” IS a “prime” lens.

“Prime” simply means fixed, single-focal-length lens, as opposed to a “zoom”.

one of my better telephotos is a zoom 70-200/2.8 nikon.
Another of my good telephotos is a fixed 300/2.8 sp Tamron prime

I was told many years ago that the US bureau
of standards uses the Leica 50mm Summicron for
their calculations.

Unless it's a telephoto zoom.
