I'm having a high school student design a website for my photography. Any ideas on what I should pay for this service?

Depends on whether he/she is building the site from scratch just coding the html or is using a template.

Coding would demand more money. Templates are just fill in info sort of things.

Hi Celia: I once had a company build me a web site, that once it was built I could select various backgrounds and colors etc, it was a "cookie cutter template website." I paid over a $1,000 for this service over 10 years ago. Which with my knowledge now is way to much. There are lot's of free on line build your own website programs out there. Which are every bit as good as the one I paid for. Should he be using one of those I would only pay him for his hours, which he probably is being a highschool student. Find out about how many hours he thinks it will take and come to an hourly amout that both of you deem reasonably and fair. Maybe something like $10 per hour. The real challenge to having a website for business purposes isn't in the building of the site it's the maintenance and placement in the search engines that takes time and sometimes money. In the entire year I had the website I had one hit and that was from a friend. I was also paying them a monthly hosting fee. Just food for thought... Hope this helps.

Some more hints. If your site is going to sell pictures, you'll need a template with 'Pay-Pal.' A basic set up thought would be:
1. Doman Name ( Your own unique name ie., grainypics.com )
2. Hosting Site ( one could be GoDaddy.com) they also verify/get Domain names there.
3. Template and lots of info to fill in the blanks and pictures of what you're selling. ( Your student needs all the info )
4. How about maintenance charges ? A price on basic setup and start is one thing but who is going to maintain the site and how much maintenance/changes in a month ?

I did a site for a political candidate that I charged $500.00 for basic 6 page setup. Each modification or addition ( speeches etc ) was $25 up to $200.00 max in a month. ( 8 changes) Anything over was $50.00 a pop.

It's not just a setup you pay for, it's the maintenance also. All this unless you learn some HTML and get a wysiwyg ( what you see is what you get html editor )

I'm hoping that once the site is up and running I will be the one maintaining it. If I can get the design and setup, then I can find a domain.

NOTE:
1. Domain Name ( Must be in effect and registered )
2. Hosting ( They store your site )
3. HTML Editor ( to adjust your site pages )
4. FTP Program ( to send your files to the Hosting Server )

PS: GoDaddy can get you a domain name and do your hosting.

I design web sites. If you want to operate at your end you need a CMS site ,mostly Joomla. If you are selling you need an on-line market with PayPal and credit cards. This quite complicated in Joomla and expensive. An ordinary on-line market is easier and quite effective.
To give you an idea I charge £48.00 for an ordinary site, £75.00 for an on-line market.
You will get more info from my web site

Do not pay over the odds. Designing a web site is not that difficult

Sarge lets you know the whole picture. That's good. Here is a part of that puzzle that may help a little. Your HS student will be glad to know this is available:

htp://www.bluehost.com/track/blacklab

The domain names are free and the web site is $5.95 per month.
I'm sure he knows about meta tags that will help with the hits.

My wife used GO DADDY to do the website for our wolf rescue. They were there for her anytime she had questions and walked her through any problems. Go Daddy also helped her set up our gift shop.

Great bunch of hints and paths to travel given. Hope all works out for you.

PS: I have Microsoft Front Page for an html editor and it is fantastically simple for a 70 year old.

What you type is what you get and then just FTP ( File Transfer Protocol ) the changes up to your hosting site.

Here is one of my sites

http://www.usps.org/portsmouth

The opening screen will automatically bring you into the site.

Celia, this is a very broad question. It would be like: How much should I pay for a Car??

See what I mean. ;-)

You really need to give more detailed information what this student is doing for you.

Go Daddy is not free, and when I was a real estate agent for 4 years during the turn down I did not one hit. I think websites are very over rated.
