It appears there are a few who would like to begin with the basics. If you are willing, I am willing to show you how easy the (P) mode is. Here's how I take a photo on (P). To evaluate your photo, send me your example by attaching the photo file. Send it to bob.coker@gmail.com I'll send you back any necessary changes.

This is a good post especially for a beginner. Plain and simple. Just my speed. Even though I rarely leave manual mode, I found that program mode comes in real handy when dealing with snow or beach scenes because all you have to adjust is the EV levels.

P mode... P for professional or panic... The P mode is great during bright and sunny days. It's disadvantage is that you can't control the aperture and shutter speed. Hence, you lack creative exposure control. It is the same as using your dslr like a big expensive point & shoot camera. But it is a very good way to start.

however on Nikons in P mode you can use the command dial to select different fstop/shutterspeed combinations that will provide the correct exposure.

Good advice coker .. I've been challenging everyone to learn the basics of how to use their cameras creative zones .. for exposure compensation I had them use the P mode ... so all they had to concentrate on was not getting blown out sky ...
I like P because you still can adjust all the settings .. but the flash doesn't automatically pop up in low light situations :)

Add being able to concentrate on composition (and, if you have it, DOF preview).

This exercise is to get a correct exposure on (P) first. In other words, I am looking for a correct histogram on (P). Leave ISO and White Balance on Auto for now. Do you use a flash. We need to understand how to get the correct histogram without the flash. If you want to play this game.. shoot a photo on (P) and upload the original so we can discuss. ~ Smile
