Carbon fiber is the best. But if you are out an need a tripod, use what is around you,a tree a rocker a fence post. I read once where you can use a string an a bolt. Tie the string to the bottom of the camera an attach the bolt to other end of the string. Step on the bolt pull the string tight. This will work to some degree when you have nothing else to use.

I think the ads are personalized. Most of the ads I see are about things I've googled recently.

Welcome to the Hog LJR,

I too have issue with lugging around a 5-8 pound tripod. I went out and bought a carbon fiber tripod at Costco a couple of years ago and am very satisfied with it. It does tend to sway a little in higher winds but that can be fixed by adding some weight to it while setup which does the trick. The tripod is very inexpensive and you have that great Costco guarantee if you don't like it.

I use a carbon fiber Sirui tripod and it works for both my dslr and 4x5 Toyo field camera. My ball head is by really right stuff (RRS). I'm a few years younger than you but my friend is your age and she uses a Gitzo carbon fiber tripod and RRS head.

The content of the ads relate to searches that you have done. They are not the same for everyone!!

I rely on a monopod it takes the weight off of your shoulders and neck and provides a steady support. I am the same age. started in 1943.

I'm much the same. Although I have a couple tripods and sometimes use one, I'm much more likely to take my monopod with me when I go out with my camera. I use an old Slik monopod that I've had for forty years or so; recently I've shopped around to see whether there is any reason to update it but frankly I've not found one in a store that I like better than the one I already have.

I am eighty years old and have been through the same process of thinking about the weight of my cameras (4x5, 6x9, 6x7, 645 and now digital formats).
I am - so far successfully using SLIK Sprint GM tripod (about $70.00) with one of their larger (better) ball heads. I drilled a hole on the bottom of the central column to be able to attach a water bottle with a small (2") carabiner to increase the stability in windy conditions.
This setup works for me - up to 6x7 format.
Does this inspire you to find a tripod of your choice?
Paul

I am a 86-year-old guy who has been photographing since the late 1940s, recently converted to a Nikon D90 after many years of 35 mm. and large format 4x5" film photography. My Manfrotto aluminum tripod (3-5/8 pounds) and grip action ball head (1-3/4 pounds) are too heavy for me to lug around comfortably. I am looking for a lighter weight sturdy tripod and head, around 50-60" high, to use with a camera body, lens, etc., that are very unlikely to weigh as much as 5 pounds. Price is an important factor.

Suggestions? Thanks.

Recently purchased A Dolica 60" Carbon Fiber Tripod with Ball Head from Amazon for under a hundred bucks.

It's minimum height is 22", has 4 section legs with twist locks, will support 13 #'s, and weighs 3.8 #'s. Model # is ZX600B300. Includes a nice case also.

Works well with my D7100 and 70-300 lens.

An excellent choice would be a carbon fiber tripod, but as already mentioned they get expensive.
I have a trade-in that is in excellent condition and would likely suit your needs. A NEST NT-323CT Carbon Fiber tripod with center column in excellent condition at $275. It does not have a head on it but any standard head will fit its 3/8" stud on the column, or it can be equipped with a bowl head and ball mount designed for video, but they work extremely well with large format view cameras also.

I'm seeing a dog food ad. And the users here have what control over the interface?
