I believe this is an orchid.

...and beautiful orchids they are, indeed! Their tonal contrast with the background obviates, to my mind, any need to consider using DOF to separate subject from BG.
The crop seems unduly tight (cramped top and bottom) and given the tight arrangement of the five blossoms, I think a square crop with approximately equal negative space all around might be preferable to the horizontal format.

is there a rule of thumb for cropping flowers?

none of which I"m aware, other than that the single blossom can often be treated as a face in portrature.

Uuglypher makes a good point. Separation of the subject from the background can be done using difference in color or intensities of subject from the background and not just the use of bokeh. In my opinion, orchids are the most difficult flowers to photograph because they are anything but one dimensional. To capture the complete flower you most always have to open up your dof. Otherwise you will end up with a mostly fuzzy picture of what seems to be a flower. However if that is or original intent, then so be it. But in my opinion fuzzy flowers aren't appealing to me. May I suggest setting up a tripod with a long lens with, in a perfect world, good separation between the flower and the background and shot the flower working you way through the f stops. You will see what I mean within 10 shots. Good Luck. Leon
