Hello UH members. Newbie Sunnybuck here. I've been told many times throughout my lifetime that there is no such thing as a dumb question! So here goes... If someone new to the world and works of photography were to think about adding a bridge camera to the camera bag, with the apparent conclusion (according to the threads posted here) that a bridge will never produce the photo quality of the DSLR, why would one add it to the camera bag in the first place? Am I missing something here? Humor welcome....

Obviously, the bridge camera will likely be smaller than the DSLR with all the extra lenses and it will avoid the problem of missing out on a good shot while changing lenses.

But it is worth considering the opposite question: if you already have a bridge camera and are delighted with the photos you get then do you need a DSLR? Presumably you will get "better" pictures but will they be enough better that you will notice? Do you make poster-size enlargements often enough to notice the difference? How exactly do you use the photos you take?

But maybe the motivation is the added flexibility of that DSLR with all of those extra buttons and menu options. For most of us, this a hobby after all and the fun of a hobby is trying out new things and learning about something that interests us.

What I think you might be missing is that no one on the forum I have read anyway thinks bridge cameras don't produce the same quality as DSLR's. I suspect that if photos were submitted from a Nikon D800 or a Canon 5d Mk 111 and a good quality bridge camera that most people would not be able to tell which photo came from which camera. Many if not most of use different types of cameras depending on the circumstances. I just bought my wife a Panasonic Lumix FZ200 because the Nikon D90 was too heavy for her as she has neck problems. She loves the Lumix and takes great photos with it. I have a Nikon D800 and a D7000 but sometimes use a Canon G-10 because of its smaller size.

Many people on the forum use bridge cameras as their main camera and submit prize winning type photos. We all use equipment that we feel will allow us to take our best photos.

If you are adding it to the camera bag, what is already in there? A P&S, your iPhone, a large format with glass plates?

Why did they put the "n" key so close to the middle of the space bar!

I paid $370 for my first Canon SX50, and that included a bag (that is only large enough for the 50 :) ) and an SD card.

I wore that one out and Canon replaced with a factory-refurbished, year warranty, for free (8 weeks after warranty expired on my first one).

The versatility is soooo worth the slight inconveniences, such as not-great viewfinder. Though I've heard the SX60 viewfinder is much improved.

Here's a recent shot.

As others have pointed out bridge cameras offer a lot of camera for a relatively low price. Also when used within their limits, they can produce beautiful photos.

I am a 77yrs old retired pro photographer.Since retiring I have only taken photos as a hobby.I found that I was not able to carry my SLR and lenses about with me for health reasons, so bought a bridge camers,aCANON sx10 and I have been very satisfied with the results it produced. It now belongs to ''she who must be obeyed'' and I have got a sx50. It produces great photos if treated right and I no longer use my SLR.
I have 20x16ins and 30x20ins framed pictures on my lounge wall
all taken with the sx50.

Agree that you should forget the bridge and go for a 4/3 format camera. They are great. Way easier to carry around, lenses and great quality pics.

Regarding quality, it depends on how much detail you want in the picture when you crop. I agree that full size it's hard to tell the difference. But if you are going to crop your photos that's where the difference lies. Not everyone wants to crop their photos. Two pics of a squirrel on a tree will look the same. But if you crop it down to a view of just the squirrel's face and whiskers you will see what your camera and lens is or is not capable of.
