I'll get hammered for this, but I use a neutral density filter on all my lenses -- for the protection they afford. I adjust my exposure for them, sometimes in camera, sometimes in post-processing.
Would a UV filter make more sense?
Rather than a filter, unless it's needed for a particular situation, my lenses almost always have a hood on them. Good protection and I can't remember ever having a smudge...

I always use these on my glasses, but didn't think they could be used on camera lenses.

Check the information on the box. Since I always use a protective filter, I've never been worried anyway. I've never used anything but a blower and a microfiber cloth on a lens surface, never had to. But I do use the Zeiss wipes on filters, viewfinders, flash components AND batteries and battery and other electrical contacts. I also wipe my lens mount surfaces when I come back in from shooting.
Mogul, Thanks for the info. I'll have to slip a few of them in my camera bag.

What would you suggest to clean the lens? I am always having smudges on them & can never get them totally off.
Since I use protective filters, I take it off and wash it with warm water and a mild detergent.

This might work, well worn pair of underwear, The fibers should be well rounded, clean, and soft.
The fiber cloth seems just spread and smear the particles around.
I used to do that, but people gave me a strange look as I pulled my underwear up out of my pants to clean my lens.
What we need is a microfiber photographer's tie. have a lens cleaning cloth around your neck when you go out shooting.
I like that. Count me in.

I also use filters. I don't mind wiping a filter, but I hate feeling I need to rub anything across a lens. Using a filter helps me avoid that.
ROR residual oil remover.
Nothing else comes close.
Use a microfiber cloth and a liquid optical glass cleaner. Squirt some of the fluid onto the cloth. Wipe the wet part of the cloth around the face of the lens -- in a circular motion appears the best way to do this motion.
Never squirt the fluid directly onto the lens face. It is said some of the fluid could leak into the lens body. So squirt the fluid onto the cloth.
You can get optical glass cleaner from a place that sells eyeglasses. Your eye doctor should have it, too. NEVER use Windex or similar window glass cleaner.
The LensPen cupped tip contains a carbon cleaner that polishes a lens face. It has a brush at the other end for sweeping away the big stuff before using the tip for polishing.
Sometimes the LensPen cannot remove crud from the lens face. Use the wet cloth as described above to wipe away stubborn filth on the lens face.
I have been cleaning my lenses this way for years. While in the field I always carry a LensPen in case a lens needs a touch-up cleaning.
Good luck.
