If there are TWO things that have been true about Windows....

1. It will get infected with multiple viruses...

2. If it is running it is slowing down.

It is no longer 1998.

Nope its not, but windows has really not changed.... in fact it may have gotten worse ....

Its pretty bad when a fresh install of windows server gets infected with MS BLAST from going to the Microsoft update site to get the latest patches don't you think?

it has changed a lot, as is evidenced by my Unix-like uptime.

I hear what you are saying, unfortunately it contradicts my experience, and pretty much the state of the industry...

With as many infections that are out there on the internet, an unprotected Windows machine will have a uninfected life span of hours, or minutes....unless it is not used at all.

Since you have this simple method of preventing infections, please divulge it. I for one would be curious of the simple steps taken.

So you are saying you can go onto the internet, not the Apple store, and download, install and run any software you want to, regardless of whether Apple has approved it or not?

Yes, Yes, Yes!!! I've never needed anyone's permission to install anything on my Apple computers in 30 years. I don't understand where you got that ideal.

I run all of Office, Perfect Photo Suite, Photoshop CS6, Photoshop Elements, Photomatix Pro 5, PDF Pen, Business Card Composer 5, Filemaker Pro, NX2, Lightroom 5, iPhoto, Pages, Keynote, numbers, etc. Exactly what program do you have on your PC that I possible would want on my MAC?

Seems like with Adobe CC - lots of MISINFORMATION floating around ;)

So far, only ONE program that I cannot run on my Mac... VISIO... but then since I am no longer working, I really don't miss it! :) But I can jump into my Windows 7 VM in 6 seconds and run it that way I guess.... :)

Make that $2400 including lots of software.

With the i5 processor. The 4 core i7 costs more, especially with the video card upgrade. Order a 500GB SSD and 8 GB of ram from Apple, then load it to its full 32GB capacity from OWC to save some $$$. You'll have a machine that can process Photoshop faster than a Mac Pro Cylinder, but wouldn't be as fast on video processing.AND, there is no 5K monitor available for any machine except on the 27" Retina iMac.

Yes, the $2400 is for the base 5K retina model, but that does include a 1TB fusion drive (250gb of SSD), so not bad. I think the fully loaded model with 1TB SSD and some of the upgrades you mentioned is around 4K. By the way, Dell has a 5K monitor coming soon for about the same price as the Mac base 5k computer, and that's monitor only. Good luck to Dell holding that price.

Actually though, the PC might still be here, but, obviously, the MAC (built on a UNIX foundation made available because of the break up of Ma Bell) would not since the UNIX code would not have been available for that type of use.

The Unix foundation is one of the things that makes the MAC more difficult (though not impossible) to infect.

You are correct. With a windows machine, you have to actively turn on the built in virus protection, etc. On a Mac, all the protections are turned on by default- you have to actively turn them off if you so desire. That is a huge difference with a novice user.

I have heard this numerous times, just never hear what it is that"I can't accomplish what I want to accomplish, the way I want to accomplish it, on a mac." Wish some one would could tell me what they cannot do on a Mac that they can on a PC. What is "the way I want to accomplish it."?

Still waiting on an answer to this question.

OK here it is Auto CAD for MAC is lame compared to Auto CAD for pc. Go to Auto Desk web site and see that a lot of functions are not available to MAC. This is due to most Architecture and Engineering firms are on the PC platform because of a lot of specialized software. For photos I guess there is no difference but you wanted a specific this is a big one for design firms Using Auto CAD.
