Fellow Hogs:
I have been asked by a friend to do a shoot for his company website. He has a small but rapidly-growing engineering firm and wants pictures of his workers on the jobsite and of his new corporate offices. Photography is not my main line of work, but I have built up a nice small side business in my area doing shows and shooting sunsets, sailing shots, local scenes and travel pictures (you can see my work at www.frankparisiphotography.com.) I have done some work like this, but never on this scale. I figure the shoot will take me at most a day (8 hours) and the processing about half that time. I welcome your suggestions on whether to: 1) charge by the hour, and if so how much per; or 2) charge for the whole job, and if so how much. Thanks!

My personal experience is that pre + post takes twice as long as shooting. I'd estimate the job at two days and bill accordingly. I usually bill $600-$900 per day but that might not be right for you.

Thanks mtbear. I have a friend who charges $600 for a half day and $1,000 for a full day, and that includes setup, breakdown and PP. She is a pro and I am not. I'm not really comfortable charging pro prices-yet. I appreciate your suggestion!

How about asking your friend if s/he has a budget set for the job and then you can determine what you can do for that $. Then negotiate from there. It helps eliminate sticker shock.
