First, Macs are not as immune to viruses as many suggest, and second the level of immunity that exists is primarily because Apple controls what you can download, and install, with an iron hand. That, and the far smaller number of users is the reason for fewer viruses. A lot of virus authors write them for pcs where they are easiier to download onto a much much larger user base. So it all comes down to controlling what the user can do and not because Apple's operating system is inherently immune to viruses. Many businesses find that level of control stifling and choose to run and develop applications in the PC environment, despite the risks. I and many others also pass on Macs because of the lack of flexibility as a result of all this control. There's nothing inherently better in either system. It all comes down to which one is best for the way you work and the software you want to use.

Please let me know exactly what Apple will not let me download on my computers. I've owned Apple computer for over 30 years and don't know of anything that Apple has stepped in and said "You Can't Download That". I don't know of a single program that I can't download on my Apple computers. Sure would like to know what I've been missing. I'll keep my eye out for the "Iron Hand" of Apple. Would that be an ihand?

Apple also monitors 24/7 for any virus and acts to stop them as soon as they are detected. My 3 Apple computers have almost run 24/7 for 30 years and I've never seen a virus. Not the same 3 computers of course, but lots of Apple computers over the years. I've never known any one with an Apple computer that has had a virus, except those that chose to run PC programs.

I'm a retire Airline Pilot and a group of us meet for lunch once a week, years ago the main conversation was problems with their PC's. At then end of all their complaining I would just say "Buy a MAC" and I would get all kinds of remarks that the MAC was for playing games. They didn't know a single thing about Apple computers. Guess what now? They all own Apple Computers and there is no longer conversations about computer problem.

There are now enough people using macs to make tham attractive to hackers. Until recently, it was not worth the effort of any self respecting hacker to target macs.

Well that should make all Mac users feel safe then as the contents of their computers are being stolen/deleted

And the internet disagrees with you.

I only need to run virus software on my Windows XP & Windows 7 VM that runs under Virtual Box on my Mac - the Mac just chugs away, 24/7/365 - no virus issues at all...

I have never had virus protection software on my pc, and it just chugs away 24/7 for years with no issues at all. It's rather easy to avoid viruses.

in 10 years, with zero virus protection running, connected to the internet 24/7, my 7 Macs have lost NOTHING to viruses or trojans...

I suspect there are tons of people that can attest to the same thing.

Now, perhaps ONE day Mac's will have similar issues to a Windows computer, but even so, it will not be anywhere near as frequent or troublesome as it has been for Windows.

I would find that rather difficult for a Windows PC...
You must be running Linux! ;)

So you are saying you can go onto the internet, not the Apple store, and download, install and run any software you want to, regardless of whether Apple has approved it or not?

Agree. It would be like having sex without a condom on an HIV ward. He probably has lots of viruses and malware, just nothing that's totally debilitating, ...yet.

But for the breakup of Ma Bell, we would all be on Unix based machines today.

If there are TWO things that have been true about Windows....

1. It will get infected with multiple viruses...

2. If it is running it is slowing down.
