The other place to check is any sporting goods or running store. Just about everyone makes them now.

I have a ray-o-vac from Home Depot which works great and has red lights under $20

$15.00

My hunting partner uses:

Both work well and provide enough lite to navigate the trails and to field dress game.

Have tried the hats with the lamps built into the visors but found they don't have the range for lighting up a trail.

I'm a scout leader and backpacker and have used many types of headlamps. The second one above would be my choice of those two for a couple of reasons. The Northbound may be very reliable, but is a little lower in lumens, but yet more expensive. The Energizer brand is pretty reliable, available and usually rugged. Preferably, I would pick a lamp that uses AAs instead of AAAs. The reason being, 1 AA is the equivalent of 3 AAAs (as I understand it). That said, though AAs are a little heavier, they will last longer than AAAs. I have an Energizer that has a pack of 3 AAs and will run for a long time, very bright, cost about $25 some years back.

Other than brand name, go for the most lumens/$. You don't have to spend even $40 for a really bright reliable light. I wouldn't go below about 50 lumens though. Here is the Energizer I use, or one of them.

If you want to be able to almost start a fire, here is a 5000 lumen light. I'm not really recommending this though.

Let me recommend the LED Lenser 7R. It comes with a rechargeable ion battery $66 at Amazon. Had red, brightness settings and strobe.

I like the Petzel's. LED with three intensity settings. I also have a model that has a red flip up lens cover which is nice for dark sky shoots. Very lightweight. Uses 3 AAA batteries that last a long time. I also keep one in each car in case of the need to change tire or look under the hood at night. Very useful around the house also.

I don't remember the brand of my headlamp and it's somewhere in the trunk of my car. The one feature I like about it is that it has a flip-up red filter on it with a good seal ring. Most of the time I've used it, I have the red filter down (on) so that it does not destroy my night vision. I think I got it from REI.

Great point. Thanks Mogul. I'll look for the red filter option.
