Cheap ($200) kit lens (Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS) has stopped auto focusing. Will not allow camera shutter to work unless auto-focus is turned off. Sought help from Canon. They recommended cleaning contacts. Tried that. All my other lenses function. Then Canon said return for repair. Is it worth sending in for repair or should I just spend the bucks and get a new and better 18-55mm lens?

Unless its still under warranty, my guess is between repair and shipping it will cost you way more than the lens is worth. If they have to open it up and replace the focus motor, they'll probably charge you a minimum of $100 and most likely more. If you really like that kit lens, put that money instead into the new 18-55 STM version, which is a major upgrade to the earlier version.

By reading all your posts on this subject, and knowing what this lens is actually worth, ($200.00 at B&H) I'd toss the lens. Now is the the time to look at a newer lens, or maybe a "L" quality lens. If the cost of a new lens is out of reach, try KEH.com. They handle a big inventory of used lenses. I've bought several from them, and they grade the lenses very conservatively. My Canon EF 70-200mm f4L IS USM came from them when I opened the package I would swear the lens was new. KEH also has a good warranty, and trial period. Sorry but your lens is not worth the trouble, nor the money to repair.

I have lucked out a few times... I mean really lucky. It's definitely worth the postage to ship it for a quote. The reason I say that, is the "luck of the draw" factor.

Three times now, I have shipped two camera's and one lens for repair quotes. I never mention the words "repair quote".

The three times I have lucked out, I never got a quote back, but instead, got the item back repaired and noted "in warranty".

I have certainly sent more items in for repair (I had 3 failed Sigma lenses out of 5 ... Sigma has to have the most inconsistent Quality Control I have ever experienced). In most cases I get a quote, and in most cases the quote is higher than I am willing to pay.

However, in those cases, I learned to ALWAYS at least send it in, and see what happens. You get lucky sometimes. It's often at least worth sending the item in for a look-see. Sometimes you find a friend on the diagnostic bench.

KEH camera will repair any lens for $195. That includes shipping back to you. Worth a thought.

There you go. Do you want to pay $195 for a repaired $200 lens? Didn't think so.

I had exactly the same problem with the same lens, Canon Australia repaired it in no time and dropped the quoted price as I was under the impression it was warranty, actually 2 weeks out, but it was grey import so no warranty. But for $56 Aus. The lens is as good as new. No need to upgrade just because you can.

Spend $195 plus one way shipping to repair a $200 lens? Why is that worth a thought?

didn't realize it had gotten so expensive, consider the Sigma 17-70, I only use the 18-55 on my T1i or T4i now when I want a lightweight daytime lens, Sigma is longer(70), shorter(17) , faster(2.8), heavier, Bob.

I love my Sigma 17-70mm, it's always in my bag!
