On Day 2, my friend and I did a jeep tour out to Crystal Mill near Marble, CO. We arranged for just the two of us on this ride so that we could have some freedom with stops. The mill is one of those iconic places for photographers, so I don't expect to offer anything new. But if you haven't been, you can see some of what lies in store should you decide to visit. Smitty, the tour owner, was our guide and a really great sport.

A nice series!! I've been to the mill many years ago, it looks like it's been restored some.

Very nice, when were you there? We did the road September 14th, over from Crested Butte on the Devils Punchbowl and it was an interesting narrow road my husband was not so excited to have to go back over it to our camp site! We have many of the same photos! I liked Lizard Lake, did not see the tree carvings, would have liked to see them.
Thanks for the beautiful photos.

All those old mining roads all over The San Juan's are really awesome. Looks like you had a nice trip with some nice pictures too! Now I'm retired it's on my radar to go back for about a month and travel them all ! For anyone interested Funtrek Books sells a really good book that details all the roads and rates how much experience you need etc plus you are guided with odometer readings and explanations along the way. I highly recommend the book.

Great shots. I had planned to take this trip when I was in the area the last week of September. Unfortunately I waited too long to make reservations and they were booked up solid.

I've driven my own truck into Crystal Mill before. I highly DO NOT recommend a full sized truck on those roads.

Beautiful work on a beautiful part of this great country. Thanks for sharing them. I used to live in Colorado and now in Nebraska. I have wondered why I left the former. Don

Since it's my first time there, I have no comparison. But I do know that the lands all along the road and around the mill have been posted with "no trespassing" signs and visitors are advised that photographing the mill is limited to the roadside--with access to the river below off limits. That was learned the day of the tour. Kind of a bummer since I had every intention of scrambling down to get some upward shots.

Thank you, Photolady! We traversed the road to the mill on Oct. 3rd, but I would have been hard pressed to want to do the Devil's Punchbowl (the one in Oregon yes, Colorado no)...too much time bouncing around. :? Lizard Lake was very appealing to me as I love water reflections.
Did you post your pictures yet?
P.S. Where in Colorado do you live?

(Per an earlier forum discussion, I'm working on coming up with that new avatar, but every camera breaks when it's aimed at me.)
