Some people just have to have 'power'. They think they offer their expertise without knowing the whole story. It's one sided to say the least about him. He didn't even wait for your explanation, which was more rude than his earlier statement. What was it any of his business anyway?

I noticed he didn't have a companion with him! Who would want to be around a self-centered control freak like that?

Marc, just to let you know, I am in pretty good physical health, I am mainly a land and seascape photographer, and I use a tripod under all conditions with 2 second delay.
My friend uses a tripod and cable release.
Bright sunny days, plenty of light, yep, I'm still on a tripod.

I think you should have put your Tourettes Syndrome to really really good use and told him to "Go F... Yourself".
You do not have to explain anything whatsoever to people like him.
You should not feel humiliated at all.

I am not familiar with that tripod at all and it may be that he is right about the tripods capabilities. But that is totally irrelevant.
He could have been civil and helpful and you three likeminded people could have had a wonderful chat while he imparted his experience to you. Thats what we do around here.
As it was, he was a complete A-hole and therefore he becomes a non-person, an insignificant spec who does not matter at all.
We have all met that person Marc.
Do not give him another thought.
Marc, just to let you know, I am in pretty good ph... (show quote)

Definitely no gentleman and not deserving of your silence.

FWIW, I always use a tripod and release when shooting landscapes.

you can't control what people say. you can control how you handle it. You did well.

Any unsolicited a "advice" is usually "attack", for who knows why. Deficient people feast on others.

I've been to that one, as well as Bug Light. I love the challenge of trying to get a good unique shot of something that millions of people have already photographed. So I do a lot of lighthouses. I'm still new to "The Hog" and have yet to post any photos, but when I do it will most likely be lighthouses. The Nubble Light in York would be my "home" lighthouse. I grew up just one town inland from there.
Thanks for your response and good luck with your photo endeavors. I'll be looking for ya.

My friend... whomever he was..., from your description, I know all I need to know about him, and the value of his opinion. You have spent too much time on this, time that he does not deserve.

I know a bit about Tourettes from where I work, itmanifests itself in a number of ways. If I was there next to you, he might have thought I was the one who was suffering from it, but you showed all I need to know about you!

Godspeed, southern Maine is indeed beautiful. ;0)

Hi Marc, the world is full of a-holes you were bound to bump into one sooner or later, ignore it and move on, you are a better person than he will ever be

Marc, the worst thing you could have possibly done is allow an inconsiderate jerk ruin your time with your fiancé and camera. In future cases, such as this, just enjoy your time and ignore the jerks.

There are far more decent photographers, and others, out there that will cross your path and enhance your experience for having done so.

Above all, keep photographing and enjoying that.

To paraphrase a line from the new movie "The Judge." "Imagine a place where people care what you think. Then go there." This would do two things. Delay their reaction while they decipher it and really get your point across to whoever else might be listening.

There are always jerks some where. Let it go, nothing we can legally do about them. Say a few choice words if you need to out of earshot. Go back to loving photography. PS I use a $200.00 or so tripod on sunny days too with a release. Good sharp photos result.

Hi...I thought I'd posted this earlier this week...but have not seen it listed here so will post again.

Recently my Fiance and I went on a leisurely photoshoot for fun and relaxation to one of our favorite places here in southern Maine. I should point out I have a mild case of Tourettes Syndrome with which my hand shakes occasionally and I use my tripod and release cable to get really clear photos.

We were shooting away when a couple approached us and the gentleman had a nice SLR in his hand. I said hello...nice day and then be got snobby and asked me...in a condescending voice..."why are you shooting in the bright sun with a tripod and cable release...it's probably 1/1000 second". I said "for stability". Before I had a chance to explain my issue...he said "get rid of that tripod and get a good one...throw it out"...a little puff of wind will blow it over"...and then walked off.

I have a relatively new MePhoto Roadtripper I got earlier this year and paid $200 for it...which on my budget is decent money.

Needless to say it put a damper on the shoot which we were just finishing anyway and I felt humiliated by his unnecessary comments. Once of out ear-range my Fiance called him a couple of names to me I won't write here...but it got me thinking...what did I do to deserve this? I was just being nice and got lambasted for it.

Lesson here...always take the high road...be friendly...and please don't make disparaging comments to anyone. Nobody deserves that.

For what it's worth...have a good day...and remember to please be kind to everyone.

He cant have been much of a photographer if he thinks there is no need for a tripod in bright sunlight. Any photographer in the know, knows what a tripod is for, even in bright sunlight. I mean you could have been doing anything like HDR or focus stacking or just for stability as you were doing or even for videoing or timelapse.

We in the UK are not without our quota of ignorant photographic know all's. It is even worse when the ignorance is found at your local camera club, and from one of the members of the committee. I was to give an evening introduction about what I do for a living in the photographic field. As the members made their way into the club room, The higher achy took up most of the front row you could tell who they were by their blazers and club tie's plus of course the Canikon medallion's (camera's) around their necks. I thought It's going to be a tough night. I overheard the Club Secretary ask a new member, what Nikon do you use. His reply was I don't have a Nikon I use a Sony A900. That was the first and last time the Secretary spoke to him all evening, although they were sat next to each other. What a way to treat a new member, the Secretaries camera was a Nikon D800. If I'm not mistaken the sensor is made by Sony and tweaked by Nikon. Ignorance as they say is bliss, blissfully unaware of the technicalities of his camera. Equipment snobbery is rife here in the UK. If it isn't Canon or Nikon then you aren't in the club. Which made me popular (not) as I use Micro 4/3rds camera's on my drones ha ha

WhooHoo! Boy when I saw your initial post I KNEW you would get a ton of responses!!!!! I heard a story once that may account for that 'gentleman's' comments.
They were getting ready for a production run up in heaven one day and were ordering parts.... A billion right legs, a billion left legs, a billion right arms, a billion left.... you get the drift..... Somehow someone dropped a few zeros off the brain column and accidentally added them to the Rectum page. The next day the lower angles were putting folks together when suddenly they realized that they had run out of brains but had all these extra 'other' parts. The supervisor called upstairs to Archangel Peter and explained the situation. Peter's response was "use what ya got"!!! This goes a long way in explaining why we have so many A~~holes in the world. But just remember.... God must love em because he made so many of em......

Rest assured Marc, that you rose above the ignorance of this man. You have no reason to feel belittled. He has every reason to feel ashamed.
