Isn't the term "black reflector" an oxymoron?

Wonder why its been called those terms by cinematographers and photographers for decades? What does it reflect? Nothing.

It IS a flag,
You are right, I was wrong.
Now I'm right because I agree :-)
I was stuck in my thinking, thank you for pointing out my mistake.

No, it has never been called a gobo.
If you were to try to use it as a gobo, it becomes a flag, since it does not let light through.

It reflects light.
Unless it is a black hole, it reflects light. Everything reflects light except, you guessed it, a black hole.

The link I provided earlier called it a GOBO.
The technique is displayed there, nomenclature is obviously debatable.
We never referred to it as a gobo in the studios where I worked. Usually used Black Lightform panels.

Good topic Rongnongno!

Black reflector, indeed to add contour to a light or translucent object taken in high-key photography by example.

I also used them in portraiture as a way to control reflection, and reflective color cast not as a shade.

I am asking because no one asks about those (that I noticed).

Your posts are all interesting for anyone who has no idea on how or what this is about.

Never say NO ONE in a forum of old timers from the film era. Subtractive lighting was taught by many Pros in the film era at lighting seminars. It is a valuable technique still used in car photography, product photography and portraiture. Not everyone use "apps" instead of skill to create images.

You can use to reflect black into an object or block a light source, however, by its nature of being black ( absorbing light) it does not reflect. So in what case are you referring? Placing over the top of a highly lit person to allow light from the side to illuminate the subject, or placed in such a way to give contour to a reflective subject?

Yes I have used a black collapsible hoop to block unwanted light. A boom is very desirable when over the top of a subject or you'll get the feet of the assistant or the base of the step ladder, etc etc.
You can use to reflect black into an object or blo... (show quote)

When I read the tittle, I thought, what black reflector, by nature black DOES NOT reflect it absorbs... Oh btw I use acollapsable hoop it change/absorb light.

There is no such thing as "black reflector", a black absorber ok....yes this device will change/ add contour to light.

i think rongo is fine-tuning his "what question can i ask to start a flame war while i just stand to the side and watch" skill :)

and in my universe, lightbulbs suck in darkness; they don't give off light. thats why they are usually black when they burn out..they are full of darkness.

It is a term-of-art for the black that often comes with a reflector kit.

Have used my black 'Light Absorber' on outdoor portraits under flat light. It is the alternative to 'adding' an artificial light on one side of the face. Works in a more subtle way.
