What exactly are you calling a "mini" camera?

P&S cameras with remote shutter capability are few and far between, only some of the higher end models offer it that I know of.

With a USB output connector, smartphone and an USB OTG Cable you could try something like -

I faced the same dilemma for my Canon SX700. The software CameraWindow is intended to allow you to use a smartphone as a WiFi trigger for a compatible camera's shutter release, but since the primary purpose is stability of the camera during the release, it's simpler to elect the timer function. With the camera sturdily positioned on the tripod, choose a one or two second delay on the timer, press the shutter release and stand back. Nice stable shot without external paraphernalia!

On an older P&S (perhaps like hsredfish2003 camera) I opened the case and ran wires out from the "fire button" and attached a simple earphone plug.... from there the possibilities are endless as long as the two wires are contacted (connected by solid state or mechanical relay).

I just recieved my new (Refurb) Sony HX50 $180 kit from Newegg. Hay, WoW, via usb one can attache a $25 timer and also a $10 push button. The push button, like the "fire button" above can be adapted.... oops, there is a radio controlled fire mechanism $25 !! Wow such versatility.

Timer:

Simple Shutter extension button:

Of course extra batteries and parts to adapt for adding 37 mm filters. My lit searching and few shots show the quality of this $450 camera (intro price) to be very good with a little Post Mod. 20mpix, 30X Leica made lenses. Small enough to fit in pack on your belt.....

Simple solution...

Both Adorama and B&H sell a “Kaiser Strap-on Adapter” if this is what you’re looking for.

I've seen a couple mechanical ones that fit over the camera and physically push the button. I would have to think that this would be a lesson in frustration.
