I don't want to start the whole canon vs Nikon debate, however all reviews say that the image quality on the Nikon blows away the canon. Snapsort rates the Nikon at 85 and the canon at 65. If anyone has had either or both of these cameras - is there really that much difference in image quality between these two camera? Any help is appreciated.

Good grief, why would you even think about upgrading until the 7D MK II comes out. That would be a true upgrade! And all of your lenses would work. To think about switching to Nikon with the investment you have in lenses alone is absurd in my opinion.

I don't have either camera, but I do have the Nikon D800 and D700. Their image quality scores are 15 points apart, just like the D7100 and 70D (83 vs 68). I can definitely tell the difference in the image quality between the D700 and D800, and I have not used my D700 at all since I got the D800.

I think the 70D has two features which can be significant advantages: better video/live view AF for moving subjects and the articulating screen. If you expect to shoot video a lot, then the 70D is the camera to get. If the articulating screen is very important to you, then the 70D is the camera go get. One UHHer has the D5300 instead of the D7100, with the articulating screen being one of the main reasons.

If you are primarily going to shoot photos, then I think the D7100 is a better camera because of the overall image quality and slight advantages in dynamic range, color depth, and high ISO performance. But is that enough to switch systems? Probably not.

I think now might not be the right time to make any change. The 7D Mark II will be out in November, so it is worth seeing how that performs, though $1800 is significantly more than the 70D/D7100, both at $1100 (+/- $5). In the next 6 months, though, we might have a new "best DX camera from Nikon", either a D7200 or D9300. The 70D is about a year old, though, so a 80D does not seem imminent.

Hello: I had the same question a few weeks ago. Did my homework. I went from a d-90 to d-7100. I have to say I love this camera. It's wonderful.

Is it just me, or is the guy in the first shot facing the wrong way?

I've been a Nikon shooter since 1980 and that being said I wouldn't switch to Nikon if I were you even if there is a marginal advantage in image quality on the D7100. Your pictures can be great or mediocre with either camera. Much more depends on you skills as a photographer
and post processor than which camera you take the pictures with

First of all you are used to Cannon Cameras. You would have to learn a whole new menu system and different ergonomics from the Cannon. When I upgraded from a D300 to a D810 I did not have to look at the manual to know how to use it. The controls and menu system are virtually the same and using the camera is completely intuitive. After all these years I think Nikon

Secondly as many have mentioned there's the cost of the glass. To replace the lenses you have with Nikon equivalents would cost you $2700 at B&H or Adorama (2900 if you upgrade to the new Tamron
16-300) Depending on the condition of your lenses and whether you trade them in or sell them directly on the secondary market you will take a significant loss on your current lenses.

I think you would have to be very unhappy with your Cannon to make the switch
