Some sugarhouses. Some of you old timers from way up north might get tears in your eyes upon seeing the tubes. It is sad but when you're hanging anywhere up to 50,000 taps you'd never make it with buckets
What are the tubes used for ? Collecting the sap ? I've never seen that before. .. pg 10
What has happened is that tubes replace buckets. These tubes begin at 5/16'' on the further trees and they connect to bigger hoses and on and on and then the tubes, which have become hoses, windup in a pump house and from there the sap is pumped to a holding tank near the cabin. By doing this they can tap tens of thousands of trees and only a couple of fellows need to be there. Sort of like milking cows. Near here there is a family who tap 150,000 and use two mountains. Traditional sugarin' has now become an antique way except for the smaller bush. A friend has 1200 and all on buckets. This area of Québec furnishes 30% of the world's maple consumption. And not to rile up you Vermonters, we sell syrup to VT. Did you actually believe that a small state like VT could produce ''Pure Vermont Maple Syrup'' for a whole country?

Roadrunner you have taught me something again. I had no idea that maple "syrup" is gathered through tubes. I still visualized buckets and not such large groves of trees. What is the juice (SAP) from the tree called and are the groves called an orchard?

Heck I was 55 before I saw my first orange tree, and that was in Calfornia...The ''water'' from the tree is called the sap. The groves are called ''sugar bush'' ...Jim

A am bannished from the kitchen but my wife was gone so I made up my favourite meatloaf. A standard one but I slipped in a few chopped up garlic cloves, then cracked a can of Chipotles in Adobo sauce and spread the Adobo on top and took one chipotle and cut it up into four pieces lined them up lengthwise on the loaf....I love this recipe because she won't eat it and that leaves more for me
I am inspired by the awsome beauty and grandeur of nature, as shown in the first 3 photos. Also, on my trips I am inspired to find beauty in the small things. I look for photo ops that most would miss, as show in the last 3 shots.
Grand Tetons
Grand Canyon
Yellowstone Falls
Cactus w/ nest @ Big Bend NP
In the mountains of Wyoming
@ Theo. Roosevelt NP
Just three.
But today is February 29, 2012. Maybe "leap year" could be a suggested shooting topic.
I'm very late, but would like to join this photo challenge. A couple of questions, though: 1) How do I get to the post the same day? I get an email each day with a link to the day's posts but they are always a day behind. And, 2) Is the Challenge not meant to be taking a photo(s) each day? It seems many posts are of photos taken in the past.
Whatever. . . . . I am really enjoying the photos and your examples are wonderful, Photogirl!

This photo blog sure inspire me, thank you Photogrl, thank you everyone! Last night I attemped my first nigt shot...Not very sure what I did, but this is a goal of mine, will keep working on it!
One of the great things about digital is we can delete what we don't like or our bad shots. Night photography is easy if you have a tripod and a way to take your camera to manuel mode. 110 pictures were taken to get the last picture.
Nice work. (P. 19) Makes me want to try some more night photography too. Thanks.

Many things inspire me including all the beautiful shots I see on UHH. I take a walk near San Francisco Bay and airport everyday. I love airplanes, birds, flowers so I get to see nature's beauty everyday.
Something about ducks I find very calming
I see Hummingbirds almost everyday
