I have been asked to take photos at at a Town Hall type meeting for a charity organization being held at a hotel conference room. I would like to get photos of the speakers at the mike as well as the attendees. I have a Canon 6D and a 24-105mm lens. Will this be sufficient? Or should I rent a camera that has faster frames per second and a faster lens - like. 24-70 2.8?
If you're using a flash, the 24-105 should be okay. For available light, the f/2.8 will probably be a better choice.
Thank you, nicksr -- yes, I will be using a flash.
Just make sure you have a good fresh set of batteries & a full spare set. I would recommend Duracell's Quantum line. They're rated to last quite a bit longer than even the good old coppertop variety. DON'T use a drugstore or big box store brand. They typically don't have the lasting power of the major brands.
Thanks again -- good advice!
Good luck with the event.go for it.don't be afraid to shoot
and shoot.
Flash will be more important than the fast lens...not only lets you freeze action but you can also dim out the background and have the speaker be the focus of the picture. Try to have a diffuser/light modifier as well.
If you are going to rent, and flash is an issue, suggest the 85/1.8 as an option.
If you plan on using a lot of flash, suggest rechargeable batteries. Best I have found are Sanyo Eneloops.
Costco sells a pack of AA, AAA, and charger for under $30.
As batteries go, they are pretty amazing.

You failed to inform us of the size of the facility involved. In a small room your 24-105 might suffice, but in a larger setting you may want the pull of a 70-200mm. Why would you need a faster frame/minute camera at a "town hall type meeting". What is this body going to be discussing? Is this a non-contact government agency? Are you the photographer or the moderator?
And, since you are using a flash, a high frame per second won't help since the flash can't recharge.
You just have to get closer with the shorter lens and feel comfortable with that.

I agree. 200mm for larger settings. Can you access the room ahead of time to take a few photos (and look for a good spot to reside inconspicuously that will allow you to get photos of all the key people)?
