Walking out onto some rocks to get a better high surf shot, I tried to get into my LowPropack to get to another lens, I heard a soft plasticy thunk sound. Looking down there lie my D7100 on the rock. It dropped from about three feet onto solid rock.
There is a very small crack in the digital display on top of the camera and the numerals in readout of the number of images left on the card reads fragmented. The first digit is missing, the second is fragmented and the third is OK. It reads fine in the viewfinder. All other functions seem to be "OK" !!! I am thinking a new plastic window and some kind of top display module will fix it.
My question is: Should I take it to a local repair guy here in Rhode Island. OR should I pack it up and ship it to Nikon. What has been turnaround times from Nikon.
PS: I continued to shoot and the images are fine. No damage to the lens either, just the damn display.
I would send it to Nikon. I have insurance for that sort of event.

David, do you have a separate policy or is it part of your homeowners policy?
GC, Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Hey, Sh*t Happens.
Definitely send it to Nikon in Melville, N.Y. Fast turn around. Usually about 10 days. Here's their #(800)645-6687. They are FIRST CLASS when it comes to service. I should know. They've had my D600 a few times.
Like David, I have a rider on my homeowners insurance, there is usually NO deductible on it. I'd give my insurance guy a call just to be sure. They DO cover personal property perils too. Depends on your policy. They MAY reimburse you.

I've got two things covered on my personal rider with State Farm. My camera equipment and my wife's diamond. Guess which gets the higher coverage? hahahaha The diamond, ofc.

Thanks Jerry, Good advice !!
I have a policy called "APA" from State Farm. It runs about $1.50 per hundred. It is zero deductible. Covers, damage, loss & theft. It is not part of my homeowners.

Really sorry to hear it.
If you were in the UK, Nikon Kingston are brilliant, very efficient and know their stuff. I would take my camera to Nikon any time.
Sorry to hear of your camera damage. You are doing the right thing in sending the camera to Nikon. They are NOT shipping parts to private repair facilities. I used to have my local camera shop repair me cameras but now they can't get any parts from Nikon. Bummer.
The policy you want to get(that isn't a rider or endorsement on your Homeowners policy) is called an "Inland Marine" policy
I had damaged the top display glass on my D7000. There is a clear glass cover over the display and that was cracked.
It was a simple matter to use a hair dryer to heat and remove that broken top glass, cover.
A quick search on the Web produced a replacement glass cover for under $20 shipped to my door.
Unpack and carefully press it onto the the carefully cleaned display module and presto all done.
Having damaged the image count numerails you could forgo that and simply use the INFO button and the LCD for that information. I find myself hardly ever using the top display working or not.

I agree with David. I also have accident insurance; it is an add-on to my homeowners policy with State Farm; cost about $1.00 / month / thousand. Well worth it.
