Hello All,
I went to Denver this past week and found a camera store. I went in to see if they had a Nikon D610 I could hold and get a feel for. I have been looking at it online for two months now.
The d610 was very impressive looking and big. After talking to the salesman for a short time about full frame sensors, he brought out a Sony Alpha 7. It was half the weight and almost half the size. They were close to the same price (within $500 of each other).
I was having a hard time deciding on whether to get the Nikon d610 or not. Now that I have seen something lighter and smaller....I can't make up my mind at all.
Has anyone compared both of these cameras? Does anyone have any advice on how to make a decision on which to buy?
I thought I had made up my mind about getting the d610....now the decision got harder.
To add to this, I read a little on the Nikon D750.....now the decision is almost impossible....do i go for the savings (d610), the smaller and lighter (a7) or a little better one (d750)
Yikes.....
at this rate, I will never make up my mind,
Any help the group can offer, would be great,
thanks
Craig
All of the camera you mentioned are good.
I would also suggest that you look at availability, selection and price of lens, flashes etc. before you make your decision.
I use Nikon (D610) and of course I would recommend that you choose Nikon. Others will suggest you choose, Canon, Pentax, Sony, etc.
It is a choice you, and only you can make, AFTER you have done a full and through investigation of each. Good luck and let us know of your decision.

Hello All, br br I went to Denver this past week... (

Between the D610 and the A7, there are two major considerations: the Sony lens selection and the A7 EVF. If neither of those is a deal-breaker, then the A7 is a good choice.
If one of your substantial photography areas is action, though, I think the D750 wins with the best AF system. I have not seen enough about the D750 to know what other types of shooting would significantly benefit over the D610 or A7.
The Sony has no viewfinder, electronic or optical. If you put a long range zoom lens on it, you'll have problems holding it steady unless it's on a tripod or monopod. Lack of a viewfinder would be a very quick way to knock a camera off my short list.
Look at what you wrote here:
"...do i go for the savings (d610), the smaller and lighter (a7) or a little better one (d750)"
Don't you want the "little better" one? I would. Besides the D750 is lighter than the D610 and has a superior auto focus system. It is also vastly more functional with regard to lens choices than the a7. Just my .02.

Sure it does!
"The a7R's OLED XGA
electronic viewfinder (which Sony calls the TruFinder) will be very familiar to anyone who has used the NEX-6/7 or a99 cameras. The viewfinder is large with a magnification of 0.71x, and extremely sharp, with nearly 2.4 million dots. The OLED technology means that there's no 'rainbow effect' that can plague EVFs that use a field sequential system. The viewfinder eyepiece is large and is far away enough from the camera for glasses-wearers. It also does a good job of keeping incident light from leaking in."

What do you shoot?
If you shoot street, the Sony is a no-brainer. If weight is important, (as in backpacking, the Sony also has a lot to commend it due to the weight.)
If you shoot event, or sports, or wildlife, then Nikon has something for you.
Base your decision upon what the camera offers for the style of photography you shoot.
Note: I took my D800 backpacking, and a smaller, lighter camera would have been deeply appreciated.

You're right. I was looking at the wrong body.

Is sure is a thin body, anorexic looking in fact, but I'm used to Nikons ( and their Sony-made sensors.)

As a Sony owner how can you post something like this? Do you really not know that they have an EVF?

???? It absolutely DOES have an EVF. Just not a good one.

After reading an article about a pro who switched from Nikon to NEX-6 and NEX-7, I thought that made sense and took the same path. After using both cameras and various lenses for two months, I sold the lot.
Of course the NEX cameras aren't the a7, but I didn't like the EVF, in addition to the size and controls. I am completely happy with my D610 and D7100.
