Love the side-by-side spec review

I second the vote. I also use and love the side by side comparison of everything; cameras, lens, etc.

I find dpreview very scholarly, thorough and technically oriented. The manner in which they display vignetting at different f-stops on a given lens is unique and very helpful. On lenses that they do review they often comment on how a new lens improves upon it immediate predecessor and also comment on the marketing strategies of the new lenses. However, unfortunately they review a very tiny proportion of the overall number of lenses out there. For Sony lenses (I shoot Sony) even though Sony doesn't really have a large number of lenses made for their DSLR's compared to Nikon or Canon, dpreview has reviewed only a small proportion of those lenses (perhaps 10%).

An interesting point. Superficially you sounded like a grouchy old Luddite, but on reflection I realize I have some lens-camera combinations that result in have more than their fair share of keepers than the cold specs and test figures would predict. Don't know why, it just is.

I may very well be a grouchy old Luddite (sounds like a compliment) There is much more to what makes a "good" lens than test scores can indicate. I have a lens that was said in 3 photo magazines in 1984, when it was released, to have an unsatisfactory amount of distortion. I would hesitate to fill the frame with a building, but it is still my favourite landscape lens today. (What distortion?) If I want a new lens or camera, I'll research the features then try one out before buying. This grouchy old Luddite doesn't like unpleasant surprises. :)

I like this site for complete specs on almost all digital cameras and lenses available. Many of their reviews contain instructions which are better than the original manual

Yes I do...

RDR, I made comments earlier in the thread which you can read. Although I go to dpreview.com often for lenses I do not rely wholly on them. I have purchased lenses not found in dpreview.com or DxOmark.com and made some purchases using reviews on amazon.com by users of the lenses. Two such buys based on amazon.com reviews have totally stunned me for their performance/price ratio. I shoot mostly primes and very high quality and expensive lenses (Carl Zeiss). Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I would purchase a lens with a totally plastic body and a plastic bayonet mount. I wanted an 85mm lens for my Sony full frame cameras (A99 and A7R) but didn't need a fast lens such as the Sony/Carl Zeiss 85mm f1.4 lens which sells for about $1700 I think. I read about the Sony 85mm f2.8 lens on amazon.com user reviews and everyone raved about it. The new price for the lens is $300. I figured if I purchased one used on ebay if I didn't like it I could sell it on ebay and in the end lose only $30 to $40 dollars. I found one on ebay in great shape for $220. I am very impressed with its optical performance and as a bonus it only weighs about 4 ounces where the Carl Zeiss about 2 pounds. I always have the Sony 85mm in my backpack as it is tiny and so very lightweight. I also owned the Sony 300mm f2.8 lens which set me back $6300 new back in 2010. After shooting the big rodeo in Cheyenne in the press pit I decided I needed a long range zoom even though I am almost exclusively a prime lens user. I read fabulous reviews for the Sony 70mm-400mm zoom on amazon and based on my experience with the 85mm f2.8 I didn't hesitate to sell my $6300 lens to replace with the Sony 70-400 f4.5-5.6 lens. I find that at f5.6 at 300mm the zoom lens performs 95% as well as the prime f2.8. I rarely shot my f2.8 lens at apertures wider than f4. I purchased the Sony zoom on ebay used in excellent condition for $1200. With the net gain of about $2500 selling the big, heavy 300mm lens and purchasing the zoom I purchased the Sony a7R body which is a 36mp full frame camera. How sweet is that trade-off!!!

Sure, I use it all the time. Honest and timely reviews. Great resource that is better than a company-sponsored one.

Good site. A lot of information on each piece of equipment they test.

I use it, but not regularly. When I do, I find it always very helpful and objective, and often with more information than the manufacturer's.

I think there are too many opinions from inexperienced shooters. I much prefer SLRGEAR.com and the Fred Miranda site.

Yes there are inexperienced shooters here but there are also many more that have decades of experience.

I have been a member for many years. They are very informative & I have had discussion about photography equipment & technique with many of the same people since my Canon Rebel days which were before the 30D. Bab

I look at them all the time. They do the best reviews. Unfortunately seldom timely.

There previews & first impressions are timely, but sometimes they take a long time to do a review. Right now the Canon 7D section is going insane with speculation & opinions on the 7Dll. The moderators have had to shut down a couple of inflammatory topics. Bab

DPReview gives me the thorough specs and overview. It does not do "in the field" reviews. For that I rely on Ken Rockwell, kenrockwell.com. Rockwell has given me good advice so I put a few dollars in his pocket. The only thing he is weird about is that he promotes jpeg and not RAW. But you can't argue with the images he displays.

I just checked it for the new Canon 7D Mark II and right away found a small error. They list ISO up to 25600 Expanded, but the 7DM2 actually goes to 51200 Expanded.
