Need a little more detail - what lens, etc.

Obvious things - Change the battery.

Is the view normal through the finder? What do the exposure numbers say compared to another camera/meter?

One thing I love about my D90 is it has always been spot on exposure wise - even in near HDR conditions. So maybe a repair in your future?

That is a good lens. If all is set to Auto (or P mode) if you still get severe underexposure, it is probably time for service.

In auto or Pmode it works fine , I am just used to using A priority for a little more control

Have you tried resetting the camera? I've had my D90 go wonky after fiddling with the settings. One dumb question, have you checked your exposure comp settings?

Have you reset the camera to factory defaults? Would be worth trying.

You could also take a photo in Auto or Program mode noting what the Aperture is being set to then take the same photo in Aperture priority mode and compare the Exif data to see where the settings are different.

I do not know anything about the D90 but I would go through all your sub setting manually. On my camera auto reset does not reset all the changes I made to my camera.
Also check any new filters installed on the camera.

Well, If P mode works- In P mode, you can still set your aperture manually.

Check your exposure compensation settings. Probably set to +2 or something.
