I don't know about NY, I live in California. Here the sales tax for items bought in other states is called "use tax", and you are required by law to pay it. Very few people do pay it, and enforcement is basically nonexistent. But as a business owner with a sales tax account, if I were ever to be audited, they would check for out of state purchases, so I pay it.

I do not think there is a state with a sales tax where the tax is anything but a tax on the purchaser. Vendors are required to collect it and turn it in to the state but the tax is paid by the purchaser, either at the time of sale or later through another collection method usually linked to an income tax form.

From the horse's mouth (NYS tax dept)

"Sales tax applies to retail sales of certain tangible personal property and services. Use tax applies if you buy tangible personal property and services outside the state and use it within New York State."

Sooner or later the Federal govt will make a law that REQUIRES all vendors, whether via internet or a physical store, to collect the proper sales/use taxes for ALL SHIPMENTS based on the destination or the shipping point. Those who refuse to pay the tax currently are just forcing their states to raise the existing taxes to make up for the taxes that are being avoided!!!

States with no sales tax make up for it with other tax rates, fees, etc.
Basically you can't get away from it in one form or another.

Any suggestions on buying a Nikon with free shipping and no tax, sent to NY address ?

Unique Photo, I cannot remember if I used to get that to NY like that. I know sometimes I shipped to my sister here in Fl and she mailed it back through her office. Canoot remember who I brought from.

I wonder what furniture they are buying for the EXEC corporate offices these days @ the NY/NJ PA with the $15 it takes to cross, the much in need of repair, Verrazano Bridge.

and they wanted to put tolls on the Brooklyn, Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges to 'quote un-quote' 'lessen traffic. More like line their pockets.

Amazon has facilities in N.J. and charges tax. They only exempt your purchase from sales tax if you have a filed exemption certificate with them.

you would still owe the NYS "Use Tax". Most consumers never bother with it, but you are breaking the law

I like to buy local when I can. Otherwise there won't be any local camera stores. Saving 8% doesn't match the service and advice one can get.
