I just got a Nikon D5100 then was given a Nikon F1 with several very nice Lenses. Some of them fit my camera, some of them have a much smaller opening. ( still very new to this ) when for instance, I put the "Nikkor-P.C auto 1:2.5 f= 105 mm. 551394" on ( all these 'mm' numbers are really throwing me lol ) it mounted and clicked but the camera said "Lens not mounted". Some of the other Lenses seem to have a smaller lens (?) mounts and do not fit at all. All the technical stuff is Greek to me still but I am trying to learn. Do they make adapters to make them fit?
I was thinking they would have to be better quality than newer lenses but I don't know. After saving up for just the camera and basic Lens, then checking out the price of longer Lenses now I also realized I have taken up a very expensive hobby! ;)
I appreciate any help greatly!
Janette

The lenses generally will work as manual focus lenses. "New" lenses have an electonic "chip" in them that lets the camera body recognize them. I am not quite understanding what you mean by the ones that 'have a much smaller opening". In general, if they fit the body you can use them.

Using the older lenses on your digital camera at this point in your experience will only prove frustrating. Yes you can get an image through the camera but you will not have access to the automatic functions you normally use.

Clean up the old lenses and camera body, take a nice photo or two with the new camera and post them on e-bay. Put the profits to work toward a new lens you can use.

None of them work, so pack up the whole lot and send it to me!

All "F" mount lenses that Nikon has made since 1959 will work, to some extent, on their dSLRs. You may not have auto focus or a light meter, but they will work. I have an older (c 1982) macro that I use on my D40.

That said, if you don't intend to shoot film, or become a collector then ShakyShutter is right - consider selling them. Check Adorama, B&H Photo and KEH for an idea of prices.

I'd guess that the lenses with smaller opening and don't fit, may be for another camera.

I use older F-mounts on my D-60 and love them! No auto-focus or metering but I'm used to tweaking things manually so I find them very usable. They always say "no lens attached", or something like that, but they work.

I'd love to find someone wanting to sell some good F-mounts. (Hint...hint!)

Thanks everyone!
Rocco what I meant about the opening being smaller, is the end of the F Mount (yay I learned something) lens that mounts on the camera is smaller than the opening on my dlsr. Some of the lenses have the smaller mount and some snap right on. There was an F4 also and some lenses were selected to keep with it, so maybe some of the lenses are for it?
I was wondering if adapters are made that would allow them to mount. It may be more trouble than it is worth, but for sentimental reasons I was just wanting to see if I could use them somehow :)
I appreciate the advise :)

I am using old Nikkor manual lenses with my Lumix G1 with an Metabones adapter. I am getting very satisfactory results. The focus is manual, but that is what I am use to. I am new to DSLR's & it gives a a lot more versatility with & speed with my old lenses. The 50mm 1.4 give me a very fast short telephoto/portrait lenses. The 105mm 2.5 gives me a fast medium telephoto lenses & so on.

I do find that on my D-60 the flash doesn't work if I use old lenses. Not sure what's up with that, maybe it only works with TTL metering.

I have a bunch of Nikon stuff I'd be willing to part with. All in great condition. Some AI and a couple pre AI. Here's a short list of the AI lenses, all Nikkor
300mm f 4.5
200mm f 2
55mm Micro Nikkor
28mm
85mm f1.8
135mm
85-200mm Zoom
2X Teleconverter
I have a F3 HP with the MD4 and tons of Nikon accessories, I can send a complete list if your interested.

your flash should work, you may need to put it into manual mode though.

I bought some old lenses for my D40 on e-bay. They work but I have to put my camera on manual.

Hey that 105 is a perfect portart lens. You will get a good price for it on Ebay. But I think you are crazy if you do. You can use all your lenses on Manual. You will have to figure your apature and shutter speed. You can Even use your camera with your kit lenes as an exposure meter. I have a 500 (1000 with 2x extender) mm and 100 mm portagon by Spiritone and a brand neww lens baby that I use on my Nikons. Also as a bonus you will learn alot about using your camera in the apature and shutter speed modes when you use modorn lenses. Just my thoughts. - Dave

If you go to http://www.dpreview.com/ and look up your camera it will tell you what lenses you can use and what functions are available with it. I bought a D200 so that I can use my manual F-mount AI lenses and have metering. Works beautifully.

This site is invaluable to compare bodies, lenses and more. Check it out.

I have an old film Minolta with some nice lenses. Does anyone know if I could use these with a Canon T2i or T3i and where I could find such an adapter?

Thanks to all. I have never done posts like this but it has been incredibly helpful. Thanks for sharing your experience and experiences.

Look on Ebay for the Metabones adapter. They had many different combinations. The one that I bought was for Nikon/ m4/3 is well made & costs about $75. B&H may have an adapter for you as well.
