Question with Phottix system

Using new Phottix system with cannon 580EX2 flash. I had camera in M mode and Phottix transmitter in M mode and flash in M mode and system wouldn't work until I put flash in TTL MODE.

Why does Phottix configure it this way? Would it not be more natural to have all in Manual mode or all in TTL mode?

Which model do you have? The Strato ll is manual only, the Stato TTL is TTL only. I guess they do that to keep the cost down. I have both and they work great. Would be nice to have both in one unit at a low cost.

Looks like this model will do both TTL & manual.

My feeling is this model does both M and TTL because I can choose M or TTL on transmitter but it does NOT work if I have transmitter on M and flash on M. That is where I am confused. If I put transmitter on M and flash on TTL then it works. Should they not be both on M or both on TTL?

I found this firmware update for your model.
If that doesn't help I would contact Phottix customer support.
Here is their contact link: http://www.phottix.com/en/contacts

Thank you, the unit is brand new. Are you stating that it has software issues already?

I recently purchased a Odin too but for Canon, and that is the thing Phottix will tell you the flash MUST BE IN TTL for this model. it works in manual or TTL with the other models but not the Odin.

I have the Odins. They work fine. I don't really understand what you're having problems with. Check Youtube for videos on how to understand the Odins and it will probably clear things up a bit.

Thank you for your reply. I am communicating with phottix and waiting for their reply. My problem is simple and here it is .

There are 2 modes to control flashes wirelessly, one TTL and second Manual (M). One would expect these modes to work when transmitter is set to "M" and flashes set to "M" or conversely, TTL and TTL respectively. But when I set phottix transmitter to M and flashes to M I have no control over flash output. Only when I set flashes to TTL ( while transmitter remains on M ) do I get control of flashes from transmitter. One would think that something is wrong here. I guess I'm trying to find out if others have seen this, and whether this is a problem with a solution. I still get control of flashes but with settings not " in sync" with what one would expect.
Thank you for your interest.......
