So you think the Tamron will lock focus as quickly as the Canon?

Not having had a Tamron to actually use in the field I cannot say for sure. But with its specs I would assume it would. I do know the shortcomings of the Canon in the field and am not a fan of it. I have used the Sigma 150-500mm OS model side by side with the Canon and find no appreciable difference in focusing, but I do like the OS in the Sigma much better than the older IS in the Canon. Hoping Canons upgrade to their 100-400mm shows some marked improvement but the last rumor I heard is that its release has been delayed once again. Have to wait and see.

Just got the Tamron 150-600 from Murphy's Camera after a 1 week wait plus UPS Ground to Hawaii. B&H didn't deliver after 4 month wait and couldn't explain why. Picture quality for birds so far is good. See www.flickr.com/CaptainRBrown for comparison of 5 small birds shot with 150-600 v. others shot with Sigma 150-500. Tony Northrup, naturally, rates Canon 400 f/4 prime sharper and easier to use for BIF naturally but for less difficult shooting finds the greater reach of the Tamron a real advantage. I find the Tamron as easy to hand-hold shoot at 600 mm for small birds ranging from 40-60 feet as the Sigma and acceptable sharpness so far but I expect to get better results as I gain experience shooting at 600 mm.

Really thinking about buying some Sigma stock. They have been really impressive lately.
I have the 18-35 on a t3i and it rocks.

I have both lenses as well as the Sigma 150-500 for Canon and love all three as to quality pictures. I like the twist rings of the Tamron and Sigma better than the push pull of the Canon but I like the weight better of the Canon. Whatever you get you will be happy. I was on the waiting list at B&H for my Tamron and then on a local trip to Kentucky I just decided to stop in at a place called Murphy's Camera and they had both the Nikon and Canon in stock. Sold! My recommendation, check your local smaller camera shops for the Tamron.

Whats the best lens for birding with no tripod canon 100 400 or new tamron 150 600. Thanks for the help

I have both and really love the Tamron, it has been my all time favorite lens, but the Canon 100-400 is better for birds in flight and I personally like the push pull zoom on it better than the twist zoom. I had the Canon 400mm f/5.6 and it was lighter and faster for birds in flight.

They are both nice lenses but I prefer the 100-400mm. My copy is sharper than the Tamron. The Tamron has a problem with A1 Servo when used on the Canon 7D. This has been well documented but I understand it has been corrected with the latest firmware upgrade on the lens. Most lenses need to be sent back to Tamron to have this done.

I haven't sent mine back yet because I normally use that lens on my 5D III and there is no problem with it.

My choice, the 7D and the 100-400mm lens. The biggest complaint owners of the 100-400mm lens is the push-pull zoom. I actually like that feature though. I find I can zoom in and out quicker than by turning a ring. Old habits are hard to break and most are just use to the ring. If they took the time to work with the push-pull I think they would like it.

Good luck in your choice.

That's part of what I mentioned.
If I'm trying to lock focus on fast, erratically flying birds I would still rather be whipping around the 100-400 then the 150-600.

I agree Phil, and you know I own both lenses. The 100-400mm is shorter and lighter. I keep going back to it on my 7D. I switch between it and my Sigma 500mm with a Tamron 1.4X TC. They are my two favorite set-ups for the 7D camera.

Go take a look at what's for sale used on Amazon for Canon 100-400. I have one listed for $1345. Many others, also.

Probably so since you can buy a Factory Refurb direct from Canon with a one year warranty for $1359.

But I have watched used prices go back up on these lenses in the last month or two since everyone expecting a replacement for it at Photokina who has been reading CanonRumors.com has seen that Canon will not be releasing the new version yet.

Prices have been jumping around for this lens. Here is Adorama's price on an E+ rated one, $1334.00

Got to remember it is a great lens and there has always been a big demand for it, especially among wildlife shooters. Even more so among birders. I wouldn't expect prices to go down when the new version is released considering the new one will be at least a grand more.
