Lowepro makes a case that holds two camera bodies and 3 lenses, plus a flash and recharge batteries and dig film. It was not too expensive and fits in over head of most planes even Lufthansa and those Embrier. Never put gear in luggage except tripod and head. Remove head and wrap in bubble wrap. If you loose the luggage, you can live without tripod. Sending gear ahead means great expense and it may never meet up with you. I have been traveling with airlines for over 50 years and that is a lot miles and film. Have a good trip and many clicks.

In October, my wife and I are traveling to Phoenix and the Grand Canyon from Virginia. While we have air traveled with just a camera and maybe another lens, this is a rare opportunity for us and we intend to take tripods and a selection of gear. (We are two photographers with different styles and interests).
So among the traveling photographers out there, what has been your experience with air travel and equipment? Do you pack your gear in a foam-lined case and check it? What features should I look for in buying a foam-lined case? Has any equipment gone missing?
Or do you try to keep it as a carry-on?
Thanks so much!

I bring everything as a carry on. Tripod and camera bag.

Every time I checked camera gear, it was lost, or stolen, or damaged. I soon began keeping all such gear-including tripod-with me as my carry ons. I had one carry on bag for the cameras, lenses, etc, and a collapsible tripod with head on a sling. When the bag was on the floor in front of me, or in the overhead compartment, I slipped the tripod between the bag handles, and laid it across the top of the bag. It all fit in a small enough space.
My 'camera bag' was actually a soft sided travel bag. Into that I put several smaller foam lined camera bags, and into those I put the camera bodies, lenses, etc. Inside the soft bag, around the outside of the foam lined camera bags, I packed loose clothing for extra padding. This affair deformed enough to squeeze into tight spaces when needed...without damaging anything. I thus got by with one carry on bag for clothing, and camera gear, plus the tripod with head attached. I then had no checked bags. I got through security / customs quicker, and nothing was ever lost, or stolen, or damaged, again.
