I love taking photos of shelter pets. I volunteer for my local Animal Humane and take photos for their website of these special animals, who have for one reason or another, lost their people. It is so rewarding helping these wonderful animals find homes.

I shoot for our shelter too. It is hard not to go home every time I am out there with a new friend. Hard on the heart some times. I got my Newfy 2 years ago. He is a good friend and buddy now.

Yes, very sad sometimes, but wonderful when they find their new people.

I can see the love in the eyes of that dog just asking for a new home, and someone too love it.

Jim1945...Thank you for the compliment. I am not a pro so I don't know how much advise/information I can provide you. I am allowed 3 or 4 shots per animal for the website. When shooting the dogs, I always try and get a close up of the face/eyes (I think the eyes really pull at the heart strings), a full body shot and I strive to get a photo of the animal in a sit or down position (showing they have some skills and can be worked with), and one shot of them doing something cute to demonstrate their personality.

As for the cats...cats do what they darn well feel like doing so a little more difficult but I bring in balls, yarn, anything I can to tempt them to play with and hope for the best. Again, always go for one close up face/eye shot..cats have the most amazing eyes!

Great photos! Who could resist such darling looking animals? A recent article: Model Mutts event puts rescue dogs in a good light, by Lara Krupicka describes what some photographers in Naperville, Illinois are doing to encourage adoptions of rescue dogs. What a great way to put one’s photography skills to work. I posted a link to the article earlier on Ugly Hedgehog, but felt that it wouldn’t hurt to post it again.

I too take pictures of the animals at my shelter where I volunteer. My avatar is one of the kittens I've fostered. Your pictures are great!

I would love to foster, but I have an old guy labrador retriever that likes to be an only dog. He gets along well with others but sometimes the young dogs are just to rough for the old guy.
