If I remember correctly, I think they are in Michigan.

I don't see why Nikon won't repair it, as long as you are paying for the repair? Doesn't make any sense to me!
Good luck. ;-)

Nikon's policy is that they will not work on any grey market lenses period.. Because, in their opinion, it was purchased in the US outside of their contract with approved dealers. They don't care if you are paying for it or not, it is policy. (this doesn't mean that approved dealers don't sell some grey market but they are required to either fix it themselves or have someone that will and to notify you before purchase that the lens/camera is grey market) This is to help retailers keep pricing from being undercut by unauthorized sellers.
If a lens was legally purchased outside the US, say while on a cruise or while you were overseas, you are REQUIRED to provide a copy of the invoice from the retailer you purchased it from showing that you were physically in their store and it wasn't shipped to you. At that point you will be allowed to pay for the repairs.. Nikon may honor the 1year warranty on overseas purchased items if you were physically there when your purchased it.

Just a note... El Segundo is closed.. they moved it to Los Angeles...

Yes, on Wilshire, but after so many years in El Segundo its hard to break an old habit. I still often use "ASA" instead of "ISO" too. ;)

Hi. My name is Rick. I’m the owner and lead technician at Discount Camera Repair and a member in good standing here at the UHH. I’ve been doing repairs for other members here at greatly discounted rates and would be glad to help.

I'd be more than happy to repair the lens for you and keep the cost as low as possible. If you’re interested, please respond by private message or simply reply to this post.

I purchased an 80-200mm nikkor zoom lens some time ago. When it sent it in to Nikon for repairs, they informed me that its serial number was not an american number and they sent it back saying they could not work on it.

Does anyone know where I could send it for repairs?

A great place that I recommend is APS (Authorized Photo Service) in Morton Groove, Illinois if memory does not fail.
They only work with Nikon gear and do a great job with an unheard of turn around time.
You will find them in the Internet, just give them a call and tell them what is wrong with the lens.
They will give you a quote over the phone. I have used them in the past and they do an excellent job.

Interesting that Nikon USA will not support 'grey market' at all. What happens if you are travelling and purchase a lens while abroad?

Me too.. just wanted to let you know or remind you and not confuse everyone else... After Nikon closed and moved El Segundo, the USPS "accidently" forgot the change of address and was delivering lenses and camera bodies to El Segundo for 3 months... some were lost although the customer had "USPS tracking" and the packages were left outside the ES suite... gee typical postal employee joke I guess.. the suite was empty and had a huge sign saying that they had moved.

Note my answer above.. If you are traveling and purchase a lens abroad, MAKE SURE you keep your written invoice showing that you purchased it IN PERSON and Nikon will honor it. If you can't produce the invoice, or get a copy of it from the retailer, it may be considered grey market.
Just to better define grey market.. Nikon considers any item designed to be sold in another country and sold here as grey market. In order for grey market to happen, the item has to be sold to a dealer in the country that it was intended for.. What happens is that dealer (which may have over ordered or what ever) sells their excess to out of country buyers at a discount.... the purchaser then becomes the person of record and when they sell it to you, it is considered out of the country and used. (Since the Grey Marketer was the customer of record.) The Grey Marketer can have the camera fixed by Nikon in the country it was intended for original sale or, as Adorama and B&H will do, fix it themselves through a third party that they have an agreement with, but the 5 year warranty on the lenses and 1 year on the body may or may not be valid depending on the dealer.

By the way Dave, if you purchase it over seas it isn't grey market.. Grey market is that Joes cameras purchases it over seas from Ralphs cameras of Brisbane who purchased a container of them to make his Nikon sales look better. He sells 100 to Joes camera store at a real good price but then Joes Cameras is the "original purchaser" not the person they sell it to. It would be like you forming a company and then buying a car then turning around and trying to sell the car as new.. It isn't new, you were the original purchaser even if you had a "used car" lot. You would have to sell it as used or without the warranty unless the company had a pass through warranty... Nikon does not have a pass through warranty....
Please understand I am not picking.. just trying to explain it better than I have been... Its as hard to describe as it is to understand... lol

Sharpshooter, This issue with Nikon reached a ridiculous point with Trey Ratcliff, who moved to NZ, bought a lens there at full price and needed repair on it during a visit here, and was refused by Nikon because they deemed it grey market.
