I am not a portrait photographer so take what I say with a grain of salt. I think your lighting is great. I love the richness in his skin. What I don't like is the posing and the platter. His little arm needs to be away from his face. His arms and hands as they are are awkward looking.
What a precious little guy!.

Banjyte ... wow ... you are really close. I recently watched a creative live class on photographing babies. This lady spends quite a bit of time soothing baby to keep him/her asleep as she poses the baby just right. I think your pose is very close. The left arm covers a little too much of the face. If you are patient, slow, tender .. you could move that arm down with out waking. I've seen it done. That being said, this is a lovely image .. really lovely and close to professional. The background is lovely, and the lighting soft. I agree with Country's Mama that the platter is distracting .. maybe find a softer prop. I'm sure you won't mind working on this some more .. I could photograph this beautiful baby all day long.

Very nice, well lit photo. I don't particularly object to the arm position as it seems very natural to me given the body position. About the only thing you could have done with it is perhaps moved his hand a little to the right and closer to the other arm. Any other position would seem to me to be unnatural. My only suggestion would be to crop it with the baby's head a little more to the left. That would get the nose out of dead center and make the photo a little more dynamic.

Two suggestions:
crop halfway from the left edge to the top of the babe's head, and
use something less obviously hard and unyielding than that platter or tray to support that beautiful child.

The arm positions are unusual, but, to my eye, detract not at all from that wonderful expression of comfortable repose.

Hi Banjyte. You are the first Nigerian I have seen here. Welcome aboard. I hope I do not offend any other Nigerians by omission.

I agree with the various criticisms but I am sure you will consider them in future shooting. What you have here is still basically a good and memorable portrait with a few shortcomings. A beautiful baby. By time you go back and shoot him again, he will have changed a bit. Thanks for posting.

Banjyte,

Nice portrait of a sleeping baby, it looks like you took a lot of time setting this one up for the capture.

I don't mind the plate in the scene, it looks like a large dinner platter the baby is sleeping on. The problem with the plate is the OOF edges.

The folded arms are probably required to keep all of baby on the plate, that is Okay if you see babies in their natural sleep, sometimes they look odd.

The cropping is good, the head could have been a little more to the left side of the frame (an inch, maybe).

The serious part I disagree with is the color balance of the overall photograph. The whole photo has a blue cast, even the child's brown complexion. That should have been corrected in camera, and then PP. The baby may be a Boy, there are no other clues in the picture, except the blanket. If the blue cast were corrected in PP and the blankets remained blue, we would all know this was a tiny boy baby.

You have the basics for this type of picture down very well, just a tiny bit of fine tuning to the final exposure.

Just a few days past five days old, you can catch babies with their eyes open more often during the day. If this is your child, or a friend's or relative's, you may want to try capturing a photo with his/her eyes open. Also, there is a bit two much open space on the left of the photo.

Getting a good baby pic is tough. I posted one on chit-chat that my daughter took of my new grandson that I think is halfway decent for being taken with a point and shoot. Look for "Joshua." The thing I like about it is his white jumpsuit and the contrast of the blanket that he is on. It's not perfect by any means...but if you like it, it might give you an idea.
