I just purchased adobe Photoshop CC6 for my mac. I have been using lightroom but wanted to do more with editing/special effects. My question is I want to learn the basics of photoshop and can't find any tutorials that start from the BEGINNING. There are some good tutorials on youtube but none that I can find that slowly ease me into it. I've been playing around with the tools but need a lot of help. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Go to Lynda.com or KelbyOne. They both have lessons, not just tutorials. They are both subscription services but I think they are worth the cost because you can take lessons from the beginner level up to a very advanced level. I use Lynda.com almost daily and KelbyOne weekly. Good luck.

Yes I also subscribed to Lynda.com but I didn't want to renew it yet. I just might have to because it was very helpful when learning Final Cut Pro X and Lightroom.
Thanks!

I'm not sure if you meant CC or CS6, but the basics are identical. For simple introductory learning, you can find a lot of free tutorials on YouTube, or on iTunes podcasts. The Help menu is good within the program, but the best way to get the menu under your nose is to get "Adobe Photoshop for Photographers" by Martin Evening which works through the menu commands with examples.

Drjsox,

Check out your local community college; they probably have non-credit evening courses for Photoshop and Elements. The latter is more basic but contains perhaps 80+ % of the full blown Photoshop features. I'd also suggest finding a good book on the version you have--nothing in either PS or PSE is intuitive.

Welcome to Photoshop land. It's a little crazy here but once you get to know your way around you will find it amazing. I think all the suggestions to try tutorials are good but in my own experience I never really became proficient and often became frustrated trying to use Photoshop until I took a full semester course at the local community college. Photoshop is so much more complicated than Lightroom but also so much more powerful. Many photographers use Lightroom and are perfectly happy....as they should be. For me, I wanted to do more than what I found Lightroom could do adequately so I upped the game. I think I now make better photographs....note that I did not say "take" better photographs. And proof of the pudding is that my fine art photographs are beginning to sell. I just got back from a 3-day Photoshop World convention. Even though I know my way around Photoshop, I learned so much! I can't wait to start exploring the new techniques I learned. And final word of advice...if you are not shooting raw do not bother with Photoshop. You are wasting your time. If you are shooting raw, then learn what you can do with Camera Raw (comes bundled with PS) before you even get to PS.

Hey Cherryl, I purchased cs4 back when. Was used to using a darkroom for film until the digital age. Will never go back to film. Photoshop is such a powerful tool and you can manlipulate photos as you want, but it is a steep learning curve. You have to get used to the idea that one layer covers the next and also you have to know what you want to do with the photo to start with. It is expensive, but in my humble opinion, worth it. There isn't anything (almost) that you can't do with a photo using photoshop and I've tried a bunch of other phototools, but photoshop is the best.

Absolutely agree with every comment. And the expense shouldn't put anyone off...$10 a month is a great deal for what you get....just make your coffee at home and give up a couple of Starbucks stops.

Yeah, you'll go broke with starbucks! You really can't beat the price of ps and over the long run I think people will be better satisfied using the 10 dollor a month price compared to the BIG price of photoshop for the psysical disk.
