Can one you Zion regulars tell me what this is? I saw it a couple of days ago and puzzled.
It is a ventilation window in the tunnel that brings you in from the east entrance.
That's what it looks like, but keep it quite, Home Land Security doesn't want that know.
When they built the tunnel in 1936 they had to have a way to get the rocks and dirt out as they made the tunnel, so the windows. In the old days 50's we could stop and look out the windows. One was bigger and and would hold about three or four cars. With all the traffic and big rigs going through the tunnel now days thy wont let you stop. Also when you walked in the tunnel you would hit the walls, can't see anything. oh the good old days.

The posts were accurate. Just an added piece. My wife's great grandfather Hirschi was the person responsible to get the funds and bill passed for the tunnel to be built. He was in the Utah legislature. It passed, and then they built the tunnel.
Folks thanks for the information. I have been puzzling over that opening, window, ever since I first saw it.
