It is a beautiful image chunon. Notice the nice "S" curve you have going with the rocks leading into that gorgeous tree and then the rocks behind leading to your background trees which finish out the "S". Beautifully composed. The detail on the tree is eye candy, and you've done a nice job capturing that fog in the background, leaving the viewer wanting to see more .. that's a good thing in my opinion. Welcome to the Photo Critique Section.

Beautiful shot.

As for critique, I was wondering what the roots on the lower left did. They are not in the picture, but if they were interesting, and maybe not, but could add balance to the upper right section of the pic.

I guess really, I'm more inclined to post this on my Facebook and let folks think I've shot it (I wouldn't ever). You can't beat getting up early to shoot in places like that.

Took at Olmstead Viewpoint along Tioga Road of Yosemite NP. It was a foggy morning. I shot this photo trying to capture the beauty of the trunk, how it embraces the rocks and the gradual fading foggy background. The vanishing point is where the rocks tucked into the trunk. Settings: f/4; 1/320; ISO100; 12mm; Center Weighted Average metering; auto WB. Used Adobe PS for minor editing and cropping.

Please critique. Thanks!

ChunOn, this is an outstanding image! Congratulations. The detail of the foreground tree plus the focus fall-off and foggy conditions in the background give it a strong three dimensional appearance which I appreciate very much, not always simple to do.

I like this scene very much and your image deliciously whets the appetite for experimentaion! The various critiques indicate the variety of image previsualizations that such a scene can engender.

If I had been there with camera I'm sure I'd have "worked" the scene until the fog lifted! The four distinct planes of clarity (foreground, near middle ground, far middle ground, and the most foggy background) provide a wonderful playground / laboratory for experimenting, particularly with DOF , camera position, and perspectives provided by different focal lengths. That scene is a veritable basis for a workshop! And the single image you've shown us is beautiful.

I agree with the suggestion that of the two headline actors in this scene ( the beautiful tree trunk and the fog) the focusable one - the tree trunk - deserves to be in sharp focus.
When all is said and opinions have been expressed, I must admit to wishing that I had made this image ... even just as it is...and then planned to go back and wait for another such fog and light!

Welcome, ChunOn, to the UHH; I'm sure I'm not alone in looking forward to seeing more of your images.

Nightski, thanks for the comment. I am amazed how one views a photo from different angle and perspective. I am learning. Thanks for sharing.

Manofhg, to your surprise, that aren't any root visible on the ground.

Should have used f22.

MtnMan, in this cloudy morning and foggy background, using F22 will either I have to bump up the ISO (which might decrease sharpness due to the low lighting as the contour is not very well define anyway) or I have to use longer shutter (which mean I probably have to use a tripod). I know I should have used a larger f-stop. But help me to understand why I have to increase the DOF a lot by using F22 in this foggy day? Thanks.
