Nikon is releasing a new firmware update today for the D7100. Note: it isn't on the site yet but should be in the next day or so.
Here is the info:
•Support for distortion control data Ver. L: 2.000 and later has been added.
•Camera firmware must be updated before distortion control data can be updated to Ver. L: 2.000 or later

Modifications enabled with this upgrade of firmware, release date June 25, 2013

•When images captured using a flash in Manual or Repeating flash flash mode were played back with the “Overview” display enabled, flash output level was displayed in the flash compensation portion of the display. This issue has been resolved.
•When the AE/AF lock button was pressed with Special Effects mode enabled, Selective Color selected, and the view magnified with selective color options displayed in live view, the image did not change while live view was active. This issue has been resolved.
An issue that caused the Viewfinder Virtual Horizon to freeze when certain operations were performed has been resolved.
•When images captured with white balance bracketing enabled were played back, a white balance fine-tuning value of 9 (steps) was displayed even for images captured with a fine-tuning value of 10 (steps) applied. This issue has been resolved.
•An issue that prevented cursor movement when certain operations were performed in calendar playback mode has been resolved.
•The size of some text displayed in calendar playback mode has been modified.
•Display of focal lengths in 35mm [135] format recorded in image Exif data has been corrected.
•With movie recording at 1920 × 1080/24p in M exposure mode, subject brightness did not change, even when shutter speed was adjusted. This issue has been resolved.

NOTE: MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CAMERA BATTERY IS FULLY CHARGED:
Once the firmware is available for download: You will download it to a folder on your computer. then you will unzip it: Copy the unzipped .bin file to your memory card (in a card reader or by usb cable to the computer) then put the card in the camera and go to the (Y) wrench and then firmware. The camera should see the .bin file on the card and say it found a new version .. do you want to upgrade. answer yes.

This is Nikon's pdf on how to do it.

The upgrade is still not available yet

Mac is on the right, Windows on the left..

It appears that neither are in the link yet unless it happened last night. All of the page was there but when you clicked there was no download.. unless I have an issue with my cpu.

How complicated is downloading and installing firmware in your camera. I have 2 D90's to update and my D7100 also. I read that if not done correctly, you could do harm to your camera??

This firmware is for the D7100 only but it is fairly simple. You make a folder on you desktop, download the file to it.. then run the file. it will make a .bin file which you copy to the root area on a memory card.. NOTE: make sure your battery is fully charged. Insert the card with the update into slot 1 on the camera. Then go into the menu, to the wrench (Setup Menu) then go to Firmware version and hit okay. If the camera sees the new firmware, it will say something to the effect firmware version C1.00 or 1.01 found version 1.0 what ever ok to update? you hit yes and it goes with the update.

This update seems to be the same number as the old one on my camera but the new date allows it to go forward.. I don't think and I have a message to a friend at Nikon to verify that they felt that enough was changed to call it a "new version".
It went through the update and made the changes.

Here is a link to the pdf instructions.

As for your D90 here is the link to verify the current updates:
https://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13783#Anchor-DSLR-3800

This will show all of the DSLRs and you just click on your model.

Actually, the D90 didn't have any firmware updates but there is a distortion control that goes for most DSLRs for lenses to install.

you are very welcome.. and you are right if done wrong (ie a low battery or stopping once started) the camera has to be sent to Nikon for repair.

By the way:
Here is the link for distortion control Done the same way
Current version is 1.009 which is up from the version that I previously had on my D7100... so have to do it too.

Yes, that's what I read and they suggested to send it to Nikon anyway if one is not very good with certain technology. I am sure I can install without any problem, I hope, it's just that I have never downloaded any info. onto a memory card, only flash drives and such. Thanks again.

I wondered about the version number. I checked my D7100 and saw that C:1.01 was listed as current. I figured that since my D7100 was purchased less than six months ago, perhaps I didn't need this.

But I'll use the small SD card I used for my J1 update and see if this makes any difference. I haven't experienced any problems with my D7100, so I'm not in a rush to update it.

Make certain that the sd card is formatted and blank.
