I have an iMac desk top with a 21" monitor. I use Apple's "Aperture" with a couple of "Nic" plugins as my editing software. I'm very pleased with my Mac. It's fast, easy to use and produces great results. I'm particularly pleased with the clarity, realistic color faithfulness and sharpness of the display. I used to use a PC but got fed up with all the glitches and viruses I had to contend with. I got a couple of these problems a month on the PC. I've had the Mac for two years and have had no difficulties whatsoever. Their telephone assistance is really good. They are very knowageble and will stay with you until your problem is solved and you don't have to talk to someone in India.

I wasn't going to get in this discussion but wanted to make a couple of points, and i like the Spears vs Pavarotti response!!! And i have seen both in concert, not at the same time, of course.

There are a ton of Fords out there and they out sell Ferrari a bunch to one. But i look in my garage and i see.....oh my gosh a Ford and a Ferrari. Sure spend more on a Mac and..... oh my gosh you can even run Windows on it. GEEEE i've got a Ford and a Ferrari in my garage and in my office!!!

Just to clarify on the virus thing... the reason Mac's are less prone to viruses are because there are less of them in the universe. Hackers like to hack things that bring them the most attention/satisfaction---since Microsoft owns most of the market share, they have the biggest target on them. Don't misinterpret the data. I realize this doesn't change the fact that the Mac OS is less prone to viruses.

I have heard, as i'm sure we all have, the discussions (arguments) regarding which platform is best.. However, I haven't heard it in the context of photography and would love to hear some opinions.. Since I think we're probably at least 75% PC users I would especially like to hear from any Mac users.. Thanks..

I use mac's because I find them to be more reliable and functionally easier. Also the graphic's tend to be better. The only thing PC's have going is that they are cheaper and that's what you get in the long run. They do have more programs available but thats changing.

It obviously goes to ones' person preference. For me, it is Coca Cola & iMac. When I used a PC it was Windoze & Whiskey!

Note: My avatar pic was taken when I used windows!

Not true. When Jobs broke with Gates one of the items they agreed upon and Jobs took with him to form Apple was the firewall protection from viruses!!!!!

Thanks BigBear, You bring up another question.. Is the migration process fairly straightforward? I will have a ton (not 28K however) to migrate as well so this would be good to know..

I have a pc and a mac both side by side and have been migrating all of my pics from pc to mac because they look so much better on the mac. I have about 28,000 more to go. And Aperture doesn't work on pc's.

You are joking right? No, seriously, you must be pulling my leg. When Jobs was canned from Apple, he started a company called NeXT. There his software team developed an OS called NeXTSTEP---based primarily on the Unix OS. The Unix environment is inherently protected by a “firewall” (definition may vary). However, there is NO OS that is completely immune to software viruses!! I would be very interested in reading this agreement between Gates and Jobs.

Since the advent of the OSX operating systems Macs have been very stable in their operation. I use a Mac Pro tower with a 23in. cinema screen and a 15in Mac Pro laptop. Both have great image quality and that is because I calibrate them every four weeks with a ColorMunki Pro. I see the exact same color, and shading on both machines and get very accurate prints out of my Epson. I will say that any image problem with PC's would most likely clear up by using a monitor calibration program. Most of the photographers I know use Mac's but I suspect a PC would be just a good if you calibrate the monitor. We all use Mac's because they are simpler, but most likely because we started our computer experience on Mac and never changed.

To me this is just a Ford verse Chevy thing. Chevy is better by the way. ;)
I would only buy a mac myself. I worked for a school dist. for 32 years, part of that was as the build tech person. I would get asked a lot, what computer should I buy, which one is better? It is very hard to answer that question honestly. You have to find out what they have used in the past and what they want to do with the new computer. You have to try and find out how much they really know about computers. You have to try and explain the good sides and the bad side of each and let them decide which is going to work better for them. Go to the store just looking and play with each one. It is not this way so much anymore, but I did tell them that when you buy a mac you pay more, but if you buy a pc you pay less to start, then you add a card for graphic and a card for this and a card for that. By the time you are done you have payed about the same, maybe less for the pc, but not too much. Anyway Good Luck with your choice.

I got a PC 3 years ago with 8 Gig of memory and a 750 gig hard drive. I added another hard drive and it came to about $850. The closest in price to that is the mini mac and one cannot add anything internally. If one needs a computer to simply turn on with no hassles Mac might be the way to go. But you will pay for it. I cannot think of any major crashes I have had in 3 years. Macs are wonderful computers if you wish to pay for them. I'd rather spend my money on my cameras and lenses.
