Hi all. New here.

In your experience what is the best way to sell used Nikon DSLRs and lenses that are in excellent condition when upgrading? eBay, Craig's List, Adorama, other?

Thanks.

Player, welcome to the Hog.
I would say Craig's list, as you will get max money, but you have to be willing to deal with people.
If you sell to a reseller, you will probably get only half of its value, as they naturally need to make a profit.
I've not sold on eBay, only bought from them.
You can also try here, but since you are brand-new here, sometimes that's a red flag. But if you take paypal, i dont see what problems it could cause. Good luck.

Welcome, stringplayer.
Just list it on the UHH forum. Show pictures, if possible, and list prices. Most everything listed on the UHH for sale adds are Nikon. I wonder why? :D
Enjoy the Hog.

Ebay charges for selling and there is also possible difficulties with a buyer's payment and then Ebay's interaction with slow or non-payments. I have traded in a lens with Adorama with a very excellent end result but had to return lenses I traded in for twice because they were damaged. And their trade in allowances are only so-so. Regardless, I did end up with an excellent lens. I have had only positive results buying and selling on CL. The only negatives there are arranging an appropriate time and place to make an exchange and you may also have to wait for a while to find someone interested in purchasing your item. Also you will need to be heads up weeding through scammers who will ask you to do ridiculous things and make ridiculous statements. Frankly, if you are cautious and patient, then CL will work fine. Just my opinion though - I'm sure you will get different opinions soon.

I have listed cameras, lenses, and filters here on the Hog four different times, sold the articles each time, and have had absolutely no problems.

I use B&H whom I trust. You go to their web site or call them, list the equipment. They will e-mail you a tentative quote pending their inspection of the equipment and a shipping label. once they inspect the equipment the will e-mail you a final quote. My final quote has always been the same as the tentative quote. You can have them send you a check or issue a credit for purchase.

BTW, if you haven't found it yet, the buy/sell/trade section here is http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-6-1.html

Be aware there are many experienced buyers/sellers/traders here that will advise you if your prices are out of line.

If you want to avoid the inevitable scam artists and general hassle go to KEH.com and request a quote.

If you accept they send a free shipping label. Totally reliable and hassle free.

Thanks so much. I didn't know about KEH. And no shipping label needed - I can just drop it off!

I'll check for a quote.

I have to disagree with SS here and warn strongly against using PayPal. I have been ripped off previously using PayPal. Don't even think about getting your money back, they just ignore all emails, you can't telephone anyone, you are just left hanging. I'm not the only one who has lost money via PayPal. My advice, give them a big miss.

I have had good experiences with Ebay. A good place to sell stuff. Not so good to buy stuff -- unless you decide in advance what your top bid is --and stick to it!

I sell through Amazon. Works very well. You can see the prices of other people selling the identical item and price as you like. I simply put my price a few dollars less, and sold all three lenses in less than a day. You have to set up an account on Amazon to do this, so that you can get paid.

I have been a member of Nikonians, a camera-specific site for many years, and have bought and sold many items there. It is a great site for advice, galleries, etc - and of course has a buy/sell component. I frequently use PayPal with absolutely no issues.

Give Nikonians a try; it's a very good community for Nikon shooters, buyers, and sellers.
