Black And White - Is It Personal Preference ?

I am a lover of black and white for select photos, is it personal preference or does BW photo a more artful piece because of the more 'formal gallery' presentation.
Would like to invite comments and opinions on topic and my photographs.

Same thoughts as you to select photos look better in black and white , so with me it's a personal choice with the right subjects, or I just wonder how would this look in black and white.

For me a b&w is most interesting if the photo is about textures, light and shadow, and shapes - and often if it's a relatively simple (not cluttered) composition.

Your night time scene is super, IMO!! There is a wonderful mystery to its shadows and dimly lit walkway.

#1 has nice range of tones, but the subject isn't particularly interesting to me, nor the composition with the little tower in the direct middle.

There have been some thoughtful topics posted re why b&w appeals to some more than others.

Here's a discussion I started last year:

If you ask me, b&w is genuine photographic art. Besides needing a special eye to previsualize the scene before you working strictly with different shades of gray and not colors makes a big difference to the eye.
Today there are excellent softwares to manipulate the image during the conversion but in the past we had to work in a darkroom and change the exposure and paper grade to come up with the image we saw when we made the picture in addition to the usual manipulation of using dodging and burning-in.
Your first image is pretty good except for the visual design. I would have placed that concrete structure slightly off center.
The second shot is not a good b&w image. It is too warm and you lost all details in the shadow areas. I would like to clone that bright spot above the lights.

[quote=eye art]Your night alley picture is wonderful photo art. The top 2 don't seem to be balanced or use the rule of thirds. Great composition on the third picture. David PS You can go back after your post and number or name each to help discussion.

Nice photos! I think it depends on the image. Some of my B&W conversions are more impressive than color--other not.

Thank you to all those who have taken the time to comment...I actually concur with the opinion that the first spanish garret is too centered...in retrospect would shoot it differently....here is another perhaps this will makeup for my first 'mal-composed' photo.
Thanks again
