I did that last year...fell on a hiking trail - protected the camera, but broke my finger in the process. At least the camera and lens made it through wihout a scratch!

Yes but unless your camera is insured, it COSTS MONEY, the body will heal on its own.. You know what they say, "No pain, No gain!!" lol. If the camera is insured then let it be the victim, that's why I pay premiums. Now where did I put that Square Trade policy. hmm.
What guaranty is there that Square Trade will be in business in 2 years. There have been a number of the firms that have gone out of business, leaving the insured people uninsured. when I worke at Adorama, 30 years ago, most of what you paid for the insurance went to the saleman and store.

I was out tonight, tripped and fell, and did everything I could to make sure camera gear didnt get damaged. I got a couple of scrapes on the edge of the 7D, but they only appear to be cosmetic. Lens was locked in and didnt appear to get any damage.
damn, road rash hurts!
I did a similar thing last year at Arches Park. Camera unscratched, GPS plug broken off, 2 knees looked like hamburger. At least only my wife saw me take a dive.

It's funny how we instinctively do that. We protect what we're carrying and let our bodies get injured. that's probably because we know that our bodies will heal, but our cameras won't.
Let's hope this is the last such incident.

I did that once walking through the woods. Saved all my camera gear but broke 5 ribs. Next time I might just save myself.

There is no guarantee in life for anything except death and taxes. But Square Trade has an A+ bbb rating and has been in business for 15 years. Now, I wasn't advertising for them, but was joking about the fall. Yes I have a 3 year slip trip and fall / water "warranty" on my D7100. But, insurance is mainly you guessing its going to fail and they are guessing it wont. They have highly paid actuarials that can probably tell you the odds of any given accident. And a insurance company basis their rates on those odds. You are betting the camera is going to get damaged and they are betting it wont. If they did their studies right, then they are correct more often than not. Besides, my square trade warranty came straight from ST not a third party. So ST got all the money not some salesman at B&H or Adorama. That said. ST is a good deal if you depend on your camera as a professional like I do. I can completely deduct the insurance policy from my taxes. So I don't care if somebody gets rich off of your percentage of the taxes I pay. Besides a lot has changed in 30 years.. Guess what? We use digital now.
Has anyone had to use their Square Trade coverage? Does it cover most/all problems? Any hassles on filing for it/using it?
Thanks.

I used it on a Coolpix camera that I bought from Tiger Direct. That was my first experience with them. We had a $399 Coolpix that we had for about 5 months. The wife dropped a coffee mug on it and broke the LCD and the cup shattered and coffee flooded the camera. Square Trade sent me a prepaid package to send them the camera and accessories and they sent me a check for the full price that I paid for it (excluding tax). Now I am a believer. No run around, no we forgot to mentions, nothing.
The only thing they require is that you have the equipment to send in.. You cant claim the camera was stolen or dropped in the ocean or something like that.
I did reprimand my wife for not waiting 2 years before she did it so that we could have bought the follow on to the camera.. lol
By the way, the claim was just a call to the 1800 number and talk to the claims person. She include a copy of the invoice (not needed anymore as you give that info when you buy) and when they got the camera, they sent the check. Took about 2 weeks.
Square Trade has several options..
1 covers breaks and water damage on NEW items.
2 covers breaks ONLY on New Items after the warranty or for things not covered by warranty. Note: this also can be bought on Refurb.
3 is for things bought used.

That would be*stump* your toe.
Took a fall when taking a picture of the lighthouse in Key West Fl. I missed the last step coming out of the lighthouse museum. Cradled the camera and landed on my knee an shoulder.
If I'm going to fall, I'll protect my body first, at all costs. Camera gear can be replaced, but body parts can't. Broken bones, replacements, all take time to heal and that healing time takes away from photography time!
I've fallen with my 7D, and I've always protected the camera.
Back in the 60s, I learned how to fall in the Army, without causing myself injury.
And my camera is insured, as am I, but it's just instinctive to me.
My Nikon 5100 was not yet a year old at the time and I had only used it on the Alaska cruise 11 months earlier.
It's best to stop (walking) if you plan to take a picture I was just eyeing the lighthouse to get the best framed shot.
