I'd like to share one of my sharpest pictures ever - I think it was in the "sweet spot" in the lens - I didn't notice the effect the bird had on the tree until checking the focus - the branch next to this one had old, overgrown holes from at least a year ago - the tree was not damaged, and looked like it was thriving, so I guess these birds know how much damage their food source can sustain and not perish.

this is great, always a good day when you get it just right..
the birds don't actually eat the sap. they drill holes in the bark just deep enough to let the sap ooze out, then come back and harvest the insects that are attracted to the sap and get stuck in it...
